My ntroduction

(Ryan Tuttle) #1

I figure ill write a intro post if anyone is interested…

Historically my weight has been around 200. At max i was around 220 or 230 (im not sure as i stopped weighing myself after 215).

I felt like something was wrong as i was experience periods of intense lethargy and mental fogginess. I long suspected my diet was the culprit but i couldnt quite pin it down.

I remember eating a candy bar at work and i would become so tired and foggy feeling. I even experienced what i call “mini black outs” where i would seemingly fall asleep for a brief second and then jerk back awake.

After a lot of trial and error, seeing a nutritionist and reading the book “potatos not prozac” i tried reducing my refind carb intake and increasing my leafy vegetables.

I would have periods of feeling energized and great but also periods where i felt swollen foggy and lethargic. I couldnt figure out what was causing it. I tried eating vegan and i tried testing my blood sugar levels but still couldnt figure it out. Doctor testing all come back negative. Interestingly enough i actually had cholesterol levels that were lower than the recomended minimum.

The first time i heard about keto i pushed it aside and thought it was a rediculous fad diet. Then recently a friend was talking about it and i started investigating and i bought some of the urine test strips.

When i first tested, to my shock and surprise, i was already in ketosis. It suspect my periods of energy and mental clearity came from accidently being in ketosis.

So Ive been intentionally doing ketosis for about 3 weeks and my weight has dropped from about 187 (roughly) to 179.

Im really excited to keep trying this and see where it brings me.

Im starting to see muscle definition that ive never seen before which is quite exciting.

Anyways thats my story. Have a great day!

Ryan

Isn’t it amazing when you see the scale start moving like that?

NSV’s are the best! Congrats!

Great story, because it’s YOUR story! Welcome!

Thanks for sharing, @Ryan_Tuttle . I am also a newbie and must admit that it’s a little intimidating to jump into conversation in such a large and active group. Creating a thread where us newbies can introduce ourselves and tell our stories is a great idea.

With that, I am Dave and I’ve struggled with weight as long as I can remember. I recall dieting and gym going as young as middle school and my well meaning Mom suggesting marshmallows as a dessert because “they were fat free”

My weight peaked about ten years ago at 317. Around that time my two boys were born (they are only 17 months apart, oops!) and I realized that I needed to make some serious changes. Over the next year I struggled through the typical low-fat, high-carb routine (thanks, Mom!) and managed to drop close to 70 pounds.

Since then I’ve hovered between 240 and 270, losing those same 30 pounds countless times. I’d heard of the keto diet and was curious, but I was deep in the world of craft beer and homebrewing and that seemed too difficult to give up. About six week ago, I finally got fed up enough to make the changes I needed to make. I started researching and gaining a better understanding of the keto program and planned to start in July once our vacation ended and guests left town.

Since starting on July 30, I continued my own independent research, found the 2 Keto Dudes podcast and now understand that we’ve all essentially been lied to for our entire lives. Two and a half weeks in, I find this to be the easiest program I’ve ever been on and can easily see this being a lifestyle rather than a quick fix like every other program I’ve tried.

Sure, I miss my beer, but it wasn’t as hard to give up as it was breaking the news to my brewing buddies that I was moving on. I hope to eventually get to a place where I can enjoy one every once in awhile, but for now I am focused and feeling great. Down 10.2 lbs so far with a goal to take the next 60 off and break the 200 lb mark for the first time since high school!
