On vacation, and they had old Good Eats showing. He called them an “ice cream scoop” too. Only thing is that they come in a variety of sizes, some of which are really small. They are usually marked with a size:

Edit: What Alton Brown used his “ice cream scoop” for was crab meat + mayo + lemon + pepper, which he then rolled in panko and fried in canola oil. I may try this one day with pork dust (from pork rinds) instead of panko, and fried in tallow.
