My introduction and first post

(Kathleen Morrow) #1

I am just starting my 4th week on Keto. Wow. Just wow. How did I get here?

At little background. I am a nurse. I am 62 years old. I know what to eat from what I had been taught in training and working in the hospital for decades. Or so I thought. I have taken care of many diabetics in my years as a nurse. A few years ago, I received an urgent call from the nurse taking care of our handicapped son. My husband had sliced open is radial artery and she was sending him via ambulance to the ER. I get there just before going to surgery. Did I know he was diabetic?? Well no. His blood sugar on arrival was over 600! His blood pressure was 200+/ 120ish. That’s how I became involved into the T2D world. Then we found out our handicapped son was also T2D! All within months of each other.

I had been trying to eat healthy for years. My primary has been trying to get my lipids down for years, and my weight and my blood pressure. She said don’t eat eggs. Well one a week is okay. I had chickens! I had lots of eggs! Eat lots of whole grains and vegetables and low-fat meats. Yeah very into CICO. Exercise more. I got a dog to walk. I gained weight. 30 pounds in fact over the last 6 years. Plus, the 40 pounds the 4 years before that. Lipids were unchanged. Blood pressure kept going up too. Well, more medication of course was prescribed to lower that. I went Vegetarian. Hahahaha. Nothing helped. I knew that those things were not helping. I went looking for help. Well, I started the Plant Paradox diet at the beginning of this summer. It was helpful, but I was still tired and aching. In July I saw my Rheumatologist. I weighed in at too much for my 5-foot-tall frame. My blood pressure was through the roof. I was facing going on Humira. I asked about starting a diet to help with my Rheumatic Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. Yes, he said I could, but the diet is pretty restricting. Okay. Sounds like a challenge to me.

Then one day, (thank you Facebook) a commercial popped up in my feed. It was for Keto Chow. I checked it out but then looked up a recipe and made some Broccoli Cheese soup. Well, that was delicious. I went searching for more information. What is the Keto diet? I found the Dudes and the rest is history.

I am overweight so weight loss is a plus to feeling better in my joints and aching body. I started August 19th of this year. I have lost 11.5 pounds! 2 weeks in I had a blood pressure of 126/83! Down from 164/96 when I saw the doctor in July. Plus, I have been taking ½ of one of the B/P meds since then. I feel great. I have much less pain and stiffness. I am currently marathoning the podcasts. I cannot get enough of the science. And bacon! I love bacon. I feel like a kid in a candy store having lived on chicken and turkey for the last few years. And I just bought a trio of books by Jason Fung; The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code and The Complete Guide to Fasting. Can’t wait to start fasting beyond my current IF of 18/6.

Thanks, 2KetoDudes!

@Kathleen_Morrow Greetings! What a pleasure to read your post in which you’ve shared a bit about how you arrived along this path.

Wishing you the very best in good health… congratulations on this impressive start.

Welcome to the forum, Kathleen =).

Congratulations on your successful Keto journey thus far and I look forward to reading your posts. Those books are awesome, enjoy them and there are a lot of videos on youtube with him as well =).

Welcome, Kathleen! I’m glad you’re finding this site as useful as I am. I started on keto June 14 of this year. I’ll be 70 in a couple of weeks.

I am also amazed at the horrible misinformation we’re force-fed (pun intended). Hopefully we can all lead by example.

Best of luck on your journey!

Oh how I am glad to hear your story. I know you will find great success with this way of eating (living).

I was initially attracted to this woe because of a doctor on utube who promoted diet change to “die young at a ripe old age”. I too have seen too many friend and family do the opposite because of diet.

Welcome aboard…keep posting to us about your success and milestones.

Loved your post and feel the same way. Welcome.

Keto was/is such a revelation to me - and absolute deliverance from so many maladies, physical and mental. Plus, gurrrl, can you believe what we can eat!!! And I don’t have to exercise - unless I want to!

The longer you are on it, the better it gets.

(Kathleen Morrow) #11

Thank you. I am so ready for this journey and so far it is great!

(Kathleen Morrow) #12

Hey Kathy_Timmons. Ha that is my name too. I am too young to retire so I am looking forward to getting healthy before I do so I can actually enjoy it. So far so good.

(Kathleen Morrow) #13

SomeGuy. Thank you for the good wishes. I thought it is an impressive start too but not sure since I am new to this.

(Kathleen Morrow) #14

Momof5-Thank you. I have watched some of his videos in addition to listening to him on the 2ketodudes.

(Kathleen Morrow) #15

daddyoh, Thank you for the warm welcome and reminding me that we are all on this journey together, although sometimes I feel like I am by myself because there aren’t too many people I can share my eating habits with that don’t think I am crazy! That’s why I joined the forum

(Kathleen Morrow) #16

Thank you. You are just a few months ahead of me in terms of the diet plan. It is most helpful! Yes, we have been fed a bunch of rubbish in terms of food and what to eat to be healthy. It was hard to believe what everyone was saying at first. I was like “WHAT?”. I have a co-worker who is doing WW. I want to tell her to join me. I will wait until she asks me more. She is even trying to find out snacks I can eat. How kind is that? I have her in my sights. LOL

(Kathleen Morrow) #17

Hey Katiekate. Isn’t interesting how we all came to be here? Thanks for the welcome. I will keep you all posted. Can’t wait to do a before and after post.

Tell her your “snacks” are in the form of surfing the web or reading a great book, not eating something that may induce your body to produce insulin.

(Kathleen Morrow) #19

gingersmommy-Right? Absolutely mindblowing what this way of eating can do for so many different disorders. I was too sore and tired to even walk the dog before and she loves it so. Now, we are both practically running out the door.
Had a great big Ribeye tonight. OMG. So goooooood! It’s too good to be true!

One of the nicest benefits I’ve found is that I don’t get sore from exercising. I’m sedentary, being confined to the couch most of the time (for NOW!), but I’ve been doing 10 deep knee bends at least 6 to 8 times every day and I’m not the least bit sore.
