My Hair Is Falling Out!

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #41

You might want to get some collagen peptides since they really help with hair and nails especially. You just add a serve to your coffee or broth. You want need to eat as much to get a great protein boost.

Thanks for your advice. I’ve actually been using Collagen for over a year. The kind I have been using contains 6 Types of collagen. I work in the Supplement Department of a Health Food Store. A Rep gave me a container of a different brand, with 2 Types. When I look back, that is when my hair started falling out . I have gone back to my original brand!! I am really trying to focus on eating enough protein daily now, too!
I should add that I used the new collagen @ 5 weeks ago. I went back to my usual one last Wednesday.

Hair loss update:
My hair is still coming out in unbelievable amounts every day. I would estimate about 50% is gone so far.
My Dr says it is not thyroid or autoimmune alopecia. I have upped my caloric intake and am making myself eat more protein. I am also meeting with a wig specialist next week to see about a topper or wig. I never thought I would be dealing with this. It’s so sad…

Is your scalp irritated? Have you changed shampoos or hair care products by any chance? Maybe you’re having an allergic reaction to something?

(Rebecca ) #45

No, nothing has changed at all. I’m seeing a Dr tomorrow.

I hope you get some relief and answers. The issue I had was that once whatever it was had happened, - calorie deficit, low protein, autophagy to the point of starvation mode, anesthesia, I don’t really know - it pushed Many of my follicles into resting and then fallout. The gift that keeps on giving; the situation that pushed my hair to the fallout point might have only been a few weeks or even less, but the ‘bad phase’ lasted at least 6 months. I was on the mend, but I went on seeing fallout that felt endless.

I’m actually in a fallout phase at the moment. My theory is that once it all fell out at once and grew back at once, a lot (too many) follicles are on the same growth schedule. Bleh!!! Not as intense as that one time, but hard to be ok with myself.

Please update us on what the Dr. thinks is going on. I bet he blames it all on your diet. But it sounds like maybe something else is going on with you.

Someone on YouTube claimed that he reversed alopecia with carnivore. According to him the old weak hair fell out first and then new hair grew stronger and more dense. Assuming that this is true, maybe something like that is going on.

(Rebecca ) #49

Kib1 did you end up wearing a hair topper, wig or shave your head? I’m considering shaving it or at least getting a “crew cut” to avoid the daily trauma of losing so much. I can honestly say I have lost 50%:of my hair by now.
I have had the same thought that if/when my hair returns, it will all be in the same phase and fall out again.

(Rebecca ) #50

I didn’t say "ketogenic " but just low carb and told him what I do eat. He said the weight loss isn’t drastic enough to cause hairloss. I am to see a dermatologist now.

(Rebecca ) #51

I’ve considered this possibility, but I never thought of my hair as unhealthy…but who knows? It’s an interesting possibility though.

(KM) #52

I wore a topper for a while. I didn’t find wigs to be as easy as I thought they would be. Maybe I just didn’t give it enough time, but I wear a size petite, and it seemed to me everything affordable in that size, and there isn’t much, looked like a curly shower cap.

Once I started getting little hairs in I got a super short haircut which was actually quite fun and so easy. I may go back to it.

I thought I’d post an update on my hair. I saw the Dr this morning and it is Alopecia Areata. He believes I will lose all of my hair and it may or may not grow back. I may shave the remainder and i have an appointment tomorrow with a wig specialist. He didn’t think at all that it is diet related…in fact he praised my weight loss and the way I was eating. I am trying to come to terms with this and be thankful for all of the Blessings in my life.

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #54

Did he have any idea what was causing it, if not fasting too much is?? Any tests he could run etc?

(Rebecca ) #55

Hi, he said it is autoimmune, and is not connected to the way I eat…or anything I have done. I have never fasted more than may 18 hours. He supports the way I eat. I essentially want to let people know that Keto did NOT cause this.

(KM) #56

I’m sorry your experience may be permanent. Hope it isn’t, and you can find some good solutions and support in the meanwhile!

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #57

Thanks for letting us know.

Hope you get the autoimmune thing straightened out.

Considering how much of an impact keto can have on the immune system, saying that it is autoimmune and therefore not related to diet sounds like a nonsensical statement.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #59

Not precisely. Hair loss is known to be a possible consequence of any major dietary change. Alopecia, however, is a disease caused by an error in the immune system, in which the body’s own cells are being attacked. That type of error is not usually caused or helped by diet. So in this case, the switch to keto did not cause the hair loss, and it won’t help correct the immune system error, either, no matter how much it strengthens the immune system.

Another example of an autoimmune disease is Type I diabetes, which has nothing to do with consuming too much sugar or carbohydrate. A ketogenic diet was the standard treatment up till the discovery of insulin. It did not address the immune problem, but it was a palliative that allowed patients to survive longer. Type II diabetes, on the other hand, is a direct result of eating the wrong diet, so switching to the proper human diet helps in that case.

I hope this is clear.

I am just wondering how exactly it was diagnosed. I was misdiagnosed a bunch if times and after some research I was wondering where they won their medical degree. So chances are the docs thought process was just: balding -> alopecia. Maybe it is just me not trusting doctors…
