My Hair Is Falling Out!

(Rebecca ) #21

Update: thyroid levels have been tested and they are all normal.
TSH: O.O1 (0.25-3.50 ) range
T3: 3.73 (2.3-3.8) range
T4: 1.24 (0.8-1.8) range
The hair loss must be coming from dietary reasons. I will try to up protein. Thanks so much for your feedback and advice!

Haha, ya, T3 is amazing for losing when it’s cranked up, BUT if it’s up in the Hyperthyroid range hair loss is one of the things that happens, could be that. Plus is if that’s what it is it’ll self correct.

Either way definitely keep an eye on the protein, it’s the building blocks! On regrowth, the usually stuff like Biotin helps and you can supplement in Glycine which is why people that take Collagen have a benefit, the rest you’d get anyways from complete protein, including the Glycine but collagen is higher in it.

I’d definitely (at least) maintain the 1g/lb of protein, aside from the hair stuff, T3 doesn’t discriminate, it just burns everything, fat, muscle, all of it when it’s really high. That why in bodybuilding when people take it for fat burn they have other stuff in the mix to protect the muscle.

That is good; I color my hair and I do notice that the hair loss is more right after I do it.

I noticed this even with home products and henna. Started thinking there’s something about leaving my scalp with a wet product on it for (in the case of henna) hours that might encourage the fallout. I was also under general anesthesia once for nearly 9 hours without anyone moving my head, and lost a half dollar-sized patch of hair where my scalp was in contact with the table. Apparently I have fussy folicles!

Here is an update to my dilemma: my hair is still coming out in huge amounts. It is quite traumatic to me. I know there are people truly suffering in the world, and it’s just hair, but it’s still hard to handle. On a good (little) note, I can feel tiny hairs all over my scalp coming in. This is very confounding to me. I am trying to up my protein, even though I have little to no appetite.
I have had my share of trauma in my lifetime, but I have never lost such a huge percentage of my hair from any of them. I have to wonder how long this can go on before I am bald.

If you’re noticing the tiny hairs you’re on the right track. Once a growing hair goes into resting phase it doesn’t ever grow again, it’s a matter of time til it falls out. I found my hair just felt dead, like it had all stopped growing. (I know hair is technically dead, but if you’ve been through this you know the feeling I mean.) But the good news is all those fresh new growing ones are going to take their places.

(Rebecca ) #27

Thanks for your response. I really hope it grows enough before It’s all gone!!

(Robin) #28

Yes, all those baby hairs are good news! You’ll get past this.

(Rebecca ) #29

Thank you, Robin!

(Marianne) #30

I completely understand. I hope this is just an anomaly and that your regrowth will continue. Best!

I went through a fair bit of hair loss that started about 3 months into keto. It was enough that my hair dresser noticed.

I realized I wasn’t getting enough nutrients. Fat does not contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. When one eats a high fat diet, it is very important to make sure the rest of the food has the highest amount of nutrients possible. I cut back on the fat a bit and upped my protein. My hair grew back just fine.

(Rebecca ) #32

Thank you, Marianne. I hope so, too. I actually consider shaving my head to avoid the trauma of having huge amounts come out every day. (I’m sure that’s sounds melodramatic!)

(Rebecca ) #33

Thank you for your encouraging message. I have very little appetite but I DO eat. I am trying to raise my protein per day. This has been very unexpected, to say the least.

Any woman (or man) who has experienced significant hair loss understands that you are not being dramatic. Not for everyone, however, I have taken to wearing a wig or hair topper when going out. They are better looking than my own hair and extremely realistic. My husband and friends love them and can’t tell they’re not my own hair. I don’t wear them around the house or like to the grocery store but when I meet my friends or have a special occasion, I wear them. PM me if you want more info.

The first two are two different wigs (had to have the second one trimmed as one side was a bit longer than the other). The third picture is the hair topper.

Good luck to you! You have options!

(Edith) #35

I would never guess those were wigs!! They look great!!!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #36

I’m with you, Edie! You’d never know!

(Rebecca ) #37

Wow…just WOW!!! You look lovely!! You have offered me encouragement and hope!! Thank you!

(Marianne) #38

Wigs/toppers have come a long way.

(Marianne) #39

I hope so; honestly, there are thousands of beautiful wigs in every length and style. No need to feel self conscious about wearing one if you find you need a little help. You may want to start with a “topper.” That is only a hairpiece for the crown and not a full coverage wig. It will give you a little more volume, probably like your original hair used to be.

See how your natural hair progression goes, but remember there are alternatives.

Wow! Those look awesome!
