I had the opposite experience at Thanksgiving with extended family.

My sister-in-law asked we make a keto pumpkin pie for my brother. I’ve been trying to coach him into being fully keto, all the time, and while he has cut his insulin in half, he hasn’t gotten all the way off. He still falls off the wagon too often, but last checkup, his A1C was markedly better.

Anywho… my wife looked up a recipe, made a nice pumpkin pie with almond flour crust, filling with heavy cream and some Splenda (brother’s choice), and we brought it to the get together. Turns out about four of the group wanted to try it. One is guy who found he’s got celiac and gone “gluten cold turkey”, the others were just hearing about keto and wanting to learn more.

My husband yesterday “all that cheese and bacon you eat can’t be good for your arteries”. “Thanks sweetheart” “someone is acting a bit snobbish” “nope, just don’t need you criticizing what I eat. You get mad at me for doing it” “I just worry about you” “ yeah, I worry about you too, but you still get mad at me”

Then at thanksgiving at my parents, my sister in law and I are the only 2 who ever bring desserts. My brother and I are the only 2 keto-ers of the 14 people in attendance. I brought 3 keto desserts and 2 non keto. My sis in law brought 2 keto desserts only lol. We had some very disappointed carb eaters! Everyone found a dessert to enjoy, but they all seemed a bit disappointed. In their defense, only 2 people (I wasn’t one of them) enjoyed my keto pumpkin pie and my non keto pumpkin pie apparently wasn’t very good either. I am usually a first class baker, but I rarely have good luck with pumpkin pies anymore. And I (one of the 2 keto eaters) only liked 1 of her desserts lol.

I made a pumpkin cheese cake with carmelized roasted pecans sugar free cool whip a drizzling of sugar free caramel…it was a hit… They suspected it was keto but ate it anyway! My sister is doing keto so to finish it of I made her a pumpkin keto frothy latte w/the same caramel drizzle and topped it w/coolwhip and cinnamon…god I love keto… :heart:

no wonder all that chroic dieting i did all my life kept me hungry!!!

I’m finding that so many people have the worst, negative impression of keto. Some people think you have to eat spoonfuls of butter, drink oil in your coffee, and gorge on cheese. I gently tell them that, for me, keto just means eating avocados, adding olives to a salad, eating moderate amounts of cheese, etc. Usually, the responses are along the lines of “Oh, I could do that!”

Where and when did people get the idea that adding more fat into your diet meant you had to force yourself to eat excessive amounts of it?

Fruits are good unless you require lowering the insulin level.

I would be hard pressed debating anyone that fruits aren’t generally good for the average person.


Flu symptoms going OUT of ketosis? Anyone?

I think it’s a combination of the people who use keto as an excuse to go wild on the fats, and the popular press, turning out article after article filled with misconceptions about keto.

I was surprised to find that one person attending Thanksgiving dinner for about 25 family members brought a Keto Pumpkin Pie. I ensuing discussions, I found another family member who had made a variety of Keto dishes and had followed a Keto diet. Others at the table wanted to know what Keto was. Family members who usually see me only on holidays remarked about my 45 lbs weight loss over the past 6 month Keto diet (240 - 195)

Which is why a well-formulated ketogenic diet avoids most fruits, since lowering insulin is the entire point.

Did I say they were good on a Ketogenic diet? Fruits are good (in moderation) if you do not require to lower your insulin levels. I can take the whole ‘banana is a candy of the fruit world’ thing, but when people lob the majority of fruit is candy argument, then I have an issue with that if people do not require to lower their insulin. What are you going to do? Tell kids they shouldn’t eat fruit?

My husband and I had a slight disagreement over what causes people to become tired after TG dinner. Is it the tryptophan in turkey (which I ate about 8 oz of - because JUICY TURKEY), or is it carbs (which was my claim)?
So I had made a sweet potato casserole for the non-ketos in the house, and because it’s one of my husband’s favs. So I probably ate twice as much turkey as he did, but guess who was passed out on the couch while the other took an evening run?
I didn’t push the issue further, because I know that I was right about the carb crash, and that tryptophan making you tired is 100% a myth.
You have to pick and choose your battles, and most people you meet aren’t going to immediately just dismiss their lifelong beliefs about food. Do what you can, especially for your loved ones which is what I’m in the process of doing for my husband. But don’t spend too much of your precious time on convincing others. Give them the info in the nicest, clearest way possible, and then keep doing what you do best - living the keto life.

There’s about the same amount of tryptophan in chicken as in turkey, and there’s more in a pork chop. I think the sleepiness is from the body using a lot of energy to digest a big meal, and perhaps lowered blood sugar after a massive insulin response.

Yes. If they were my kids, I’d be bringing them up carbohydrate-free, as much as possible.

I’m rather puzzled about why you keep talking about “people who do not require to lower their insulin,” as such people have no need of a ketogenic diet in the first place.

On the other hand, this, in case you weren’t aware, is www.ketogenicforums.com, and whether we came for weight loss or metabolic health (or both!), all of us here need to keep our insulin low.

If I had no need to keep my insulin low I’d still be out there, eating glazed doughnuts. It’s that simple.

Kids need carbs in moderation, better non refined of course - Fruit, but even refined isn’t anything to sneeze at! I haven’t read any Doctor’s advice stating that kids should be following Keto (or carbohydrate free as much as possible) unless they require it for epilepsy, type 2 diabetes /obesity or other medical conditions where it could be beneficial. Moreover, Keto is a big No-No for kids and much less ‘carbohydrate free as much as possible’ . Find me a doctor who prescribes/recommends it for kids other than for the above stated medical conditions.

There is a plethora of low carb diets out there to lower insulin. Keto isn’t the only one to lower insulin. They probably almost all do.

My argument regarding that ‘Fruits are good’ was in response to the OP’s post. Did you read it? My point being Fruits are good from a perspective of someone who doesn’t require to lower their Pancreas Beta cell insulin output. I’m not into the tribal getting love likes on here so if you want to get all ’ ‘this a ketogenics forum’ blah blah de blah…eat your heart out.
