OK, first, i need to listen to more 2 dudes podcasts cuz i need to gain a stronger argument for keto.( i hear about 2 a day, still catching up).
It got crazy at the Thanksgiving meal.
The guy had an inflamed spine, i spoke of keto, its benifits … &…so… one thing led to another, and the grain grind began! the guy’s all…“fruits are good”!!!
“Sugar is ok…”…you get the point!
All i could do was speak my best, and when he started speaking the bullshit, stuff he’d been taught, all i could say was…( @richard ) like Richard says, “SHOW ME THE SCIENCE”!
Mind you, Thanksgiving may not be the best time to talk keto, however, i didnt mean it to go there.
What i did love. was , it was the first time i spoke about it and i have to say, i knew stuff!
Mostly cuz of 2 keto dudes, and this forum, and you guys!
Trust me, im not looking to preach, or change everyone. Just maybe slip in a sentance here or there as i travel my lifes journey!
WHY??? Because almost everyone has been brainwashed and deluded cuz of the crappy info being flung at us all these years!!!
Uneducated (forgive my bad spelling!)…people with not a leg to stand on…hey, that can get scary litteral for some!
i am not diabetic, i was a sugar addict headed that way.
I so completly love my new , not only way of eating since Oct. 13, 2018, but i love my new education about
this chem lab called the body!
I needed a new passion, there may be a future here!
Even if it’s a longer healthier existance!
So…how are your keto klashes going?
BET YOU HAVE SOME STORIES!
My first KETO discussion (argument) over dinner
I just say that a ketogenic diet is a way of eating that allows the body to burn fat, rather than have to store all of it.
Then, when they tell me I’ll die without carbohydrate, that all that saturated fat is going to clog my arteries, and that sugar is natural and healthy, I just smile and thank them for telling me.
You know that joke about vegans?
"How do you know if someone is vegan? Don’t worry – they’ll tell you.”
I don’t want to be that guy.
People I’ve known for years remark on my fat reduction. This is the longest I’ve stayed at this reduced amount of fat after decades of yo-yo dieting. Many of my friends have been simply waiting for my current yo-yo to slink on back up the string. After their compliment, I simply thank them for their kind words. If they don’t ask how – I don’t offer. If they do ask, then we discuss. Even then, I try to remain measured. If someone gets deep into it, then I send them to my website. It does happen, which is kind of neat.
We declined a TG invitation so we could have our keto meal plus a limited chosen carb fest w/o comments from the peanut gallery.
I have a dear friend and neighbor who desperately needs keto to reverse her diabetes. We accepted a ride to our house from another neighbor who lit up a cigarette while dropping us off and was concerned about our mutual friend.
I am sure she wouldn’t want anyone criticizing her smoking. I don’t appreciate comments on my diet as I am sure my diabetic neighbor doesn’t either. We care for each other but have to respect choices even if we feel they are detrimental
My entire family is against my new WOE and extended fasting in particular. And they are just waiting for my weight to return. But they are having a tougher time finding ways to discourage me as my successes continue.
My biggest victory, however, has been the example I am setting for my confirmed carboholic wife who is a starch-nazi — the other day she confessed to me she had lost four pounds by reducing her bread intake and skipping a few breakfasts. A small but significant victory.
I became a bit of a keto evangelist. I began to recognize the glazed over look in people eyes. Without exception the people I’ve helped with keto came to me after noticing my weight loss. And even then, very often the answer is “I could never give up (insert processed carb food here)”. At which point I agree and move on.
Help where you can. But try not to argue, and learn when to move on.
Wonderful! Even if she never does keto she has personally experienced how it works and will better understand why you are doing what you do.
"I could never give up…’ I was THAT person and if it wasn’t for watching my friends transformation both inside and out, mood change, mental clarity. If I didn’t see it w/my own eyes I would have NEVER given it a go. Agreed I could do anything for a month, gave it a try six months later I’ve never looked back. 80% of my diet was carbs I thought what the hell would I eat? And boy am I eating better then I ever have my entire life. I just wish I had done this earlier.
I announced I would be beginning an extended fast and everyone at the table became very concerned b/c I’m tiny I’m very close to my goal weight but what they don’t understand is how helpful and beneficial a fast can be for the body. My brother in law is very knowledgeable about diet nutrition and exercise and was able to help back up my ‘crazy’!
Good for him! I did a 3-day water fast many years ago when I was in college and weighed in the 120’s back then. Wasn’t fat adapted and the first 2 days were hard. By day 3 I felt amazing. You’ll be fine!
I had the opposite experience at Thanksgiving with extended family.
My sister-in-law asked we make a keto pumpkin pie for my brother. I’ve been trying to coach him into being fully keto, all the time, and while he has cut his insulin in half, he hasn’t gotten all the way off. He still falls off the wagon too often, but last checkup, his A1C was markedly better.
Anywho… my wife looked up a recipe, made a nice pumpkin pie with almond flour crust, filling with heavy cream and some Splenda (brother’s choice), and we brought it to the get together. Turns out about four of the group wanted to try it. One is guy who found he’s got celiac and gone “gluten cold turkey”, the others were just hearing about keto and wanting to learn more.
My husband yesterday “all that cheese and bacon you eat can’t be good for your arteries”. “Thanks sweetheart” “someone is acting a bit snobbish” “nope, just don’t need you criticizing what I eat. You get mad at me for doing it” “I just worry about you” “ yeah, I worry about you too, but you still get mad at me”
Then at thanksgiving at my parents, my sister in law and I are the only 2 who ever bring desserts. My brother and I are the only 2 keto-ers of the 14 people in attendance. I brought 3 keto desserts and 2 non keto. My sis in law brought 2 keto desserts only lol. We had some very disappointed carb eaters! Everyone found a dessert to enjoy, but they all seemed a bit disappointed. In their defense, only 2 people (I wasn’t one of them) enjoyed my keto pumpkin pie and my non keto pumpkin pie apparently wasn’t very good either. I am usually a first class baker, but I rarely have good luck with pumpkin pies anymore. And I (one of the 2 keto eaters) only liked 1 of her desserts lol.
I made a pumpkin cheese cake with carmelized roasted pecans sugar free cool whip a drizzling of sugar free caramel…it was a hit… They suspected it was keto but ate it anyway! My sister is doing keto so to finish it of I made her a pumpkin keto frothy latte w/the same caramel drizzle and topped it w/coolwhip and cinnamon…god I love keto…
yeah, it’s so sad the brainwashing of the past!
no wonder all that chroic dieting i did all my life kept me hungry!!!
I’m finding that so many people have the worst, negative impression of keto. Some people think you have to eat spoonfuls of butter, drink oil in your coffee, and gorge on cheese. I gently tell them that, for me, keto just means eating avocados, adding olives to a salad, eating moderate amounts of cheese, etc. Usually, the responses are along the lines of “Oh, I could do that!”
Where and when did people get the idea that adding more fat into your diet meant you had to force yourself to eat excessive amounts of it?
Fruits are good unless you require lowering the insulin level.
I would be hard pressed debating anyone that fruits aren’t generally good for the average person.
Flu symptoms going OUT of ketosis? Anyone?
I think it’s a combination of the people who use keto as an excuse to go wild on the fats, and the popular press, turning out article after article filled with misconceptions about keto.
With Kellogg and General Mills in the background influencing the press so it doesn’t become popular enough to start putting a dent in their profits and growth targets for Wall Street!
I was surprised to find that one person attending Thanksgiving dinner for about 25 family members brought a Keto Pumpkin Pie. I ensuing discussions, I found another family member who had made a variety of Keto dishes and had followed a Keto diet. Others at the table wanted to know what Keto was. Family members who usually see me only on holidays remarked about my 45 lbs weight loss over the past 6 month Keto diet (240 - 195)
