I’ve only had water, salt, and bone broth with salt and clarified butter or did I break my fast yesterday and I have to start over? Also ill be in the gym when I hit 72 hours
My first 72 hr fast
You broke your fast with the butter and even the bone broth, depending upon what your goal is.
If your goal is weight loss then you’re ok. If you are shooting for autophagy then purists will say you broke your fast.
But there are so many types of fasting; so like they say what works for you is ok. I often do 3-5 day fasts allowing either one beef boullion broth cube per day in place of coffee but not both. If I drink coffee on a fast I often allow 1 tablespoon of HWC and two packs of Splenda. Either way I will drop 4-5 pounds on the fast.
I have done 3-4 day fasts on water/salt only but experienced only modestly better results than either the broth or coffee fasts. I also wonder how much these small amounts of broth or coffee actually halt autophagy totally or just slow it down a bit.
According to some, autophagy peaks out right around 48-72 hours. Some say it does not fully kick in until 4-5 days. Go figure. Do what works for you.
I think my next fast, which starts tonight, will be a hard 48-72 hour water fast then I’ll ease into broth or coffee the final 2-3,days.
It’s YOUR FAST, only you can decide whether you broke it or not.
The best we can do is tell you what works for us.
If you were measuring ketones and glucose you would have an objective measure of what it did to your glucose and ketones in your blood and could use that to proxy insulin and autophagy per Seyfried’s GKI (Glucose Ketone Index) or the DrBozRation (Glucose / Ketones).
If you stay in ketosis you are likely losing weight and gaining benefits.
If you stay in the proposed autophagy ranges you are still (likely) garnering the benefits from that metabolic process.
