Morning fast questions

(Mark Kenyon II) #1

I’m trying to work out my morning routine. I love coffee, but in the past, it’s backed me up. (Constipation) My first week trying keto, I started losing weight, and a few days in, tried making my own bulletproof coffee. Things went well at first, but then I got backed up.
For the past 4-5 days, I’ve been doing a modified beverage. Bulletproof Teeccino. It’s an herbal coffee substitute that my wife and I like. I make about 12 oz with 2 Tbl of coconut oil and some stevia. I enjoy it.
However, I’m still finding I’m pretty hungry in the AM. I’m used to having anything from a big bowl of cereal, to an egg/sausage/cheese sandwich. I’m down to my Teeccino and an egg with a couple strips of bacon, but I’d like to work into just the Teeccino and waiting till lunch.

Any ideas to extend my morning ‘fast’?

(BTW, Today was especially hard. Work brought in some of the best Sticky Buns, and did not have our usual breakfast bar to choose from. :frowning:. But I stuck to my guns and had a 0.28 oz slim jim. )

It takes time to build things up. How long have you been keto?

My suggestion is to eliminate the coconut oil and stevia from the morning coffee. Start small. If you are used to eating breakfast at 8am, back it up to 830 or 9. then after while add another hour to the morning fast.

Consuming anything sweet no mater the caloric value stimulates my hunger.

This is my 3rd week.

It’s unlikely you’ll be fat adapted yet and that’s when the decrease in hunger comes in to play. Could be that you just need an extra something to eat each morning while you wait for adaptation to kick in and your hunger to decrease.

I’d up the egg ante, why just have 1 when you can have 2 or 3?

Mark, good luck, and keep going - you are already making progress.

We get used to things over time - even when I was a total carb eater/addict/abuser, I got used to only having black coffee in the mornings, due to laziness/being busy/running late.

Have you tried longer fasts, like 24 hours+? Just wondering if that would help make it relatively easy to not eat in the mornings after eating to satiety the evening before. We’re all different, and who knows?

On being different:

Wow, I saw that and … Never had heard that before. Yet now the wonders of the internet have shown me that it can result in dehydration and constipation. Coffee certainly has the opposite effect here.

Yeah, I’ve done some searches, and get a lot of results saying, ‘No, coffee doesn’t do that to you.’ :man_facepalming:

I’ve been off coffee, but still a little backed up, but wondering if this diet shift is shifting my other… functions.

Yes, things certainly change gut-wise. I finally figured out it was nuts - almonds, macadamias, hazelnuts - that clog my inner works. But it takes a while to switch your gut microbiome away from bugs that like carbs to Keto-friendly cooties.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

As a sugar-burner, I used to experience both constipation and diarrhea frequently. As a fat-burner, I never experience constipation—the fat seems to grease the skids, so to speak—and diarrhea only when ill. I’ve heard both that coffee makes one’s bowel move and also that it binds one up; it seems to have neither effect on me.

P.S.—I suppose it also depends on what one considers constipation. I used to know a fellow who considered himself to be out of whack if he didn’t move his bowel once a day at exactly the same time. More or less frequently than that (even if it was only a five-minute difference) seemed to freak him out. I just let my body do what it wants and don’t worry about it.

Before keto - three times a day. One month keto - 8 times a day. I need to stay close to the bathroom. No MCT oil, nothing different. This can’t be good for my body.

It’ll adjust, it happens to some people. Just make sure your drinking a lot of
Water, macros are in check. I had a lot of
Bowel movements for the first month and now I’m pretty regular.

Most likely your body adjusting to the higher fat content, it gets easier.
