More causes of obesity

Check this out… Looks like obesity epidemic so much more than just carbs, although carbs are a huge part of it. So not sure this belongs in show me the science category, but intriguing none the less.

Seems man created items for ease and fast food seem to be a big part of problem.

The BS detector is going off…

  1. it’s from Harvard, kings of the unsubstantiated link from highly confounded data
  2. see 1
  3. it says “may cause…” in the title - the crutch of all con artists in the field

It’s what Harvard does… combs data for statistical relationships that will cause alarm and get headlines. It’s their business model. Sad, shameful but true.

Lol @Capnbob That’s probably true. Fake news. Although I did hear about the link with cancer awhile back I guess that’s why it caught my attention so quick.

(Rob) #4

It could be true but it won’t be a nutritionist from Harvard that proves it.

Everything is poisonous and/or carcinogenic in high enough doses. Emerging metabolic theories of cancer are changing all the rules for how a mutation (common) becomes a cancer tumor (rare) but it probably has much more to do with diet and metabolic disfunction than etherial toxins.

This is why I’ve banned ice cream from the neighborhood pool. I smack it down on the hot concrete, shouting ‘SCIENCE, bitches!’:sweat_smile:

By which I mean of course I do no such thing.

And I had great biceps until power steering came into Vogue. LOL :rofl::rofl::rofl:

The gist here is the further and further away we get from the environment we evolved to thrive in the sicker we’ll be. But picking one’s battles is very important also. I believe some of this science but it’s probably not the biggest fish to fry. And it opens the door to ignorant people just saying “everything causes cancer so I’m not changing anything”. In my mind it makes sense to get 80% of the way there and then let fate handle the rest, avoiding all plastics and wearing only leather and hemp clothing seems extreme (or whatever this article suggests). After all, who wants to live to 100 when you’re such an oddball you don’t have any friends?

(Rob) #8

Agreed. Although as we’ve discussed before, I may only be getting about 65% of the way there :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

To be fair to the article it does get a scientist to refute the claim at the end but that just leaves the FUD that leads to the nihilistic attitude you brought up.

OH NO! ! ! ! Power steering “may contribute to” muscle wasting!!! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I get your humor don’t worry. The point is we don’t know how far you have to go down the rabbit hole. If limiting carbs and eating good fats takes 90% of the western diseases out of the equation, then that’s cool with me. And that number is probably pretty close. If using glass bottles only, eating grassfed beef and wiping with organic TP makes up the other 10% then it’s up to the individual to decide I guess.

You remember the ruminant animal guy the dudes had on a few months back? He was on another podcast and he made some good points you’d like, namely “Atkins didn’t get all of his results with organic eggs and grassfed beef, those things didn’t even exist back then”.
