Mocked for going Keto

(Nesia) #1

Hi,

I started Keto on the 25th of April, thus I am already 4 days in. I do it with IF as well. Started at around 66Kg and now I am around 63.5-64.5. I’m pretty sure it’s water weight but it’s still encouraging. I really do enjoy it and do have interest to continue.

However, my family keeps mocking me for going Keto. They have no special diet (i.e., they are’t vegan, vegetarian etc.) They keep insisting that it is some form of yo-yo diet and that my cholesterol is going to worsen ( I do have three eggs a day).

This was in reference to the Harvard publishing.

Thus, is there any way to educate them? It’s so disheartening when you share your weight loss yet even family can discourage you…

Thanks!

Just let your results speak for themselves.

Three eggs a day is nothing, especially as the connection between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol has been debunked, as well as people starting to realise that cholesterol isn’t actually the demon it’s been made out to be.

The first rule of Keto Club is: you do not talk about Keto Club. The second rule of Keto Club is: you DO NOT talk about Keto Club!
Let results speak for themselves and if someone should ask about your way of eating (woe) just say you are cutting sugar and processed carbs. You’re focussing on fiber rich vegetables, nuts and seeds, quality meats and real dairy… 9 times out of 10 you’ll get no negative feedback. If people wonder about an increase in cholesterol just say something like “yeah, I don’t know… I’m going to get a check up in a few months and see if there are any changes.”

I know exactly how you feel! I actually have a co-worker who is 5 foot 2 and 280 lb, she’s been on Weight Watchers now for 2 years, pace for meetings every single week and hasn’t lost any weight at all. Yet she’s laughing at me telling me, “ooooohh I can’t wait to see your cholesterol!”. People saying odori eats meat and butter and meat and butter LOL well I have to say I’m down almost 20 pounds I started in February, but then went to Thailand for two weeks where it was impossible to stay on, got back home went right back on immediately went back into ketosis in one day. Then Easter came 4 days later and I ate all kinds of carbage. I guess that that was a turning point because it took me 4 days to feel good again and to get back into ketosis. I will not be doing that again. Now I feel so much better the scale is moving slowly but I can definitely feel I’m thinner my husband gave me a double take the other day he said he didn’t recognize me out in the yard lol.
I guess people in my life are used to seeing me trying every single thing in the world that comes around, I did the fasting what you drink water and maple syrup with cayenne pepper, last summer I did Whole 30 for 3 months! Talk about a hard diet! Yeah I did not lose any weight nothing at all on The Whole30 and I didn’t cheat at all. So they can make fun of me all they want I’m so happy to have this forum because this is the first thing I’ve ever done that actually feels right I don’t feel deprived, I feel healthy and energetic, and I’m losing weight. I still have 80 lb to go but at least now it’s not a hundred anymore! Slow and steady it took me a long time to get here I’m not going to be in a rush anymore I’m just going to enjoy the ride.

Nicely said Olivia! That’s what they need to hear. After a while friends will show more interest in details.

Don’t swallow junk science out of Harvard. They are frequently wrong.

@Nesia I agree with the others do not try to educate them let your results speak for you. Write down what they say to you and use it for additional motivation. Keep track of your measurements and blood tests so when they do finally come around to ask questions you will have concrete, impressive data. KCKO. @Keto6468 is right about Harvard they are part of the problem. You are part of the solution😎

So true. And it appears that some Harvard researchers may be designing studies and interpreting results in ways that are influenced by copious funding from those with vested interests (Big Food). As @carl says, follow the money - then look for more good science.

Nesia, you’ll find lots of that - and plenty of support- here on the Ketogenic Forums and in the 2 Keto Dudes podcasts too. Meanwhile, welcome, and keep calm and keto on (KCKO)!

And most likely by their standards you will also die because lack of sugar or starve yourself. The epidemiology that comes from Harvard is often citing papers that are decades old and whipped into their favor to begin with. Find your own papers, give them the obesity code, show them you tube videos, by Ivor Cummins, Dr Fong, or Dr Naiman to name a few.

(Sheri Knauer) #10

Just keep calm and keto on. And thank them for their concern and let them know you’ll be periodically monitoring your cholesterol levels.

(back and doublin' down) #11

Maybe they would watch The Magic Pill that’s available on Netflix?

Yet, gotta say that Dr. Fung’s advice in The Obesity Code, and advice from most in The Ultimate Guide to Fasting (both great, recent reads) is “Don’t Tell” ~

Two days a week, my work takes me into a medical clinic. Nurses and providers consistently discuss what we each choose for lunch, what the latest attempt at ‘healthy eating’ or weight loss is underway. They cheered when I joined Weight Watchers and lost some pounds the first week. Then sneered when I admitted I’d shifted to Keto and IF. Then started hearing I was losing even more weight. Now what I hear when I weigh there (cool scale that gives me all those extras like BMR, Fat #s, lean muscle, etc) is “that’s great but I could never do that.” Hmmmm. Surprising them and proving this keto way of life has become one of my Whys!

Good luck on your own journey. KCKO!

OMG!!!:rofl: I also work with an overweight “weight watchers” girl too. She has been doing it since way before I started keto. Rolls her eyes every time someone mentions my weight loss.

As a 62 year old alpha male firefighter, this pretty much sums up my feelings on other people’s opinions on how I live my life.

(Jen) #14

I had weight loss surgery several years ago and it’s a similar attitude when people find that out. You get told that it’s the easy way which anyone who has had surgery knows that is anything but easy. I’m cautious who I tell either about surgery or keto, only if they’ve expressed a sincere interest and desire to lose weight and regain health

(Susan) #15

I totally hear what you’re saying. It’s frustrating, right?

I personally think it is downright rude for anyone to mock someone else’s eating lifestyle. Even if one doesn’t agree with the choice, who the heck says they can make fun of it??? Perhaps discuss it in a civil, open-minded manner…but mock? GRRRRRRRRR.

All I would say is that I agree with others here. Your results should eventually speak for themselves. The sad part is that I know people who are ignorant enough so that even results that are irrefutable will not move them from their current opinion. I think it’s sort of human nature.

Remember all of the support you have here.

Anyone who thinks weight loss surgery is the easy way should watch My 600-lb life!

(Doree Mortillo) #17

I loved it when Richard said that!

Here’s a great new video of a presentation on why dietary fat and cholesterol are ok and sugar is the problem. Watch it with your keto doubting family.

I read the Harvard article. First the guy says there is no science about keto then he makes all sorts claims with no science. Keto isn’t part of his standard of care. He has a conflict of interest he does not disclose

It never ceases to amaze me that I can do all kinds of things to my body. Like pierce my nose or tatoo both arms and no one would feel justified in saying anything because it’s my body. But I swear every time you are bold enough to eat all that fat on your steak, everybody is so concerned for your damn arteries. I just have to look away. I can’t even offer up a response anymore.
