Mistake- I ate a whole pound of macadamia nuts in 2 days

#1

Hi guys,

I’ve been working out- Running 10 miles a week (3 days) and lifting weights 3 days a week. Anyways, i heard that macadamia nuts were good for keto so i ordered some from amazon. Needless to say, when they were delivered on Friday, and I got home after work, i proceeded to tear in and go to town on these little crunchy delights.

fast forward to Sunday and i’ve emptied out the bag…a lb of macadamia nuts in 2.5 days…is that healthy? i think i just need to avoid nuts or portion control them going forward. it’s easy to overeat them.

UPDATE: Went for a long slow 10k (6 mile) run…feeling great. Had nothing but coffee and HWC today…going to get some protein for recovery and take it easy the rest of the day…thanks for the adivce. I’ll be weighing out and prepackaging my nuts into reasonable portion sizes as soon as i get them into the kitchen.

This community is great! Thanks again, KCKO

I’m fortunate that I’ve only been able to buy macadamias in 150g bags. But I have been known to go through two of them in not much more than a day… and that 1kg tub of almond butter only lasted a week.

So, yes, portion control is vital for me. And with cream, as well.

I feel your pain. I almost wrote a post the other day titled “Step away from the macadamia nuts.” The bag-to-mouth groove is worn quite deeply in my brain; it will look for loopholes and I if I can binge on it, I will. So my choices are to avoid completely, or portion into 1 ounce servings. At this point, avoidance is probably a better choice for me :grimacing:. Know thyself.

Same here! I have to avoid all together. And thank goodness my favorite almond butter comes in little single serving packets now! I am a binger, I admit it, always will be, always will be tempted.

Portion those nuts or any other nuts and seeds you use. I have a small jar with a lid that is complicated to open that I keep my macadamias in, it makes me stop and think about what I am doing. While calories are not a big concern, fat to satiety is the way to go.

Now you should consider doing a long extended fast, you have loaded up on good fat :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That is a lot of macadamia nuts in 2 days but hardly the end of the world. I’ve done that a few times and it was because I wasn’t eating enough fat and/or I was craving salt. Nuts are very nutrient dense so I eat them freely on feasting days as I find that a few extra handfuls of nuts consumed the day before a fast can really hold me over. As a general rule I try to avoid snacking and if I do want to eat nuts I either make them a part of my meal or eat maybe 5-10 macadamia nuts 30-minutes before dinner. I’ve found I eat less at the next meal if a few nuts are consumed before a meal, I believe I’ve read about others having a similar experience.

I make myself put keto treats that could easily be eaten in access in a small bowl or plate… not foolproof, but it stops my from scarfing right from the bag.

I ate about a pound of macadamias at Ketofest!

I measure out 1 oz whenever I eat macadamias. They are just so good I could keep eating until the entire container is gone!

I find that salted nuts (especially pistachios) are one of the few things that I am prone to still binge on, so I have generally stopped buying them. I can still overeat nuts, but if they are unsalted I am less likely to fall into that mindless “hand-to-mouth” auto feeding. Measuring out a portion doesn’t work for me, because I’ll just keep measuring out additional portions!

I’ve got better with the unsalted nuts… but roasting a tray is a bad move!

Update- got more macademia nuts from a local grocery store for about $10 for a 1/2 lb bag. I leave them in the bag but every morning right before i head out to work, i weigh out exactly 2 oz into a small container, add some pink salt before throwing the container in my backpack. It’s been working out well. I haven’t had any temptations to cheat ever since i started. Also 2 oz is plenty satiating given all the fat and goodness in macademia nuts and it definitely helps me ease out of Intermittent fasting window after 16 hours of nothing but water, air and sleep. Enjoying it so far. Thanks for the feedback and support…lesson learned

I tend to have this problem with pecans. I absolutely need to not bring them in the house. I’ve even tried only bringing them in for a specific recipe and nope. They are the only nut I binge on for some reason.

Nuts and seeds and cheese are problematic for me - if eaten outside a meal. I have had to cut out snacks altogether. That being said, if I simply MUST have something - it’s a hot cup of bone broth with some bacon grease and extra salt. The snacks (seeds, nuts, and extra cheese) cause me to raise insulin levels which then messes up everything else.

So… I may or may not have a habit of eating a can per day during my feeding cycles. I really need to know the answer to the OP’s question which was, is it healthy to eat so many macs in one sitting? In my 40 years, I had never even had one until I started keto 6 months ago. The first time I tasted one, I was hooked. Now I have a 5 can a week habit which is about $25/week if I buy them from Walmart. Mau Luna brand. Mmmmmmm-they are so perfect (Homer Simpson slobbering noise)

Yummy yes, but I think it could slow down your weight loss. Depending on how much other stuff you eat. As in I could and did eat a whole bag myself one day, and while I loved them I noticed that came up to a whopping 2,000 calories in one bag of nuts. Not that I count calories per say, but I did end up gaining like 2 pounds I think because I had my regular keto meal that night. Too much of anything can put on weight.

There was that study that @richard I think mentioned in a podcast where a guy ate 5,000 calories a day but high fat. And hardly gained much weight, vs. 5,000 high carb and gained a ton of weight. So you might not gain a lot by eating high amount of fat beyond typical calorie levels but you could gain as opposed to losing.

Eat these in moderation if you can.

Didn’t the guy from the sugar Film live on macadamias for a while. I know it was one of those movies about changing the way you eat.
