So, I just started keto today. I’m trying to stay in the 75/20/5 range and I’m using Myfitnesspal to track my macros. Question though… does mfp take fiber into account and track net carbs or real carbs? And does it matter? Am I supposed to go by net carbs? If not, then I’m definitely going to struggle getting my count down. Because the roasted mushrooms and squash I had for lunch, alone, puts me over my 18 g carb allowance. Help!
Mfp and logging carbs
Hi Jade, MFP does not log Net Carbs. If you search the item, blueberries net carbs, most likely it has been added just showing net carbs. If not you can add your own foods or recipes with only net carbs. I personally use net carbs. Welcome to Keto!

Welcome!
The percentages don’t matter as much as grams and the important gram is net carbs (under 20g). You subtract fiber from total carbs. You can also subtract sugar alcohol but, some people find it affects them and just subtract half.
This is true for the US. Just be aware that the food databases for Europe or Australasia ARE NET carbs already (since that is the labelling law there). Just make sure you are consistent in where you are getting your food data. The default options come from where you are logging so it isn’t usually an issue. I swap continents a couple of times a year so it gets more complicated when taking local foods and referring back to already logged items.
If you are using the MFP version for phones, it’s easy to figure net carbs. When you look at the page that shows your macros percentages ( and pie chart), click the tab that shows nutrition. There it breaks down carbs and fiber.
I personally go by net carbs, though there is some disagreement on the issue. Whether it makes a difference largely depends on what you are eating. High fiber foods will make your carb count add up.
For example, I recently tried the Mission “Carb Balance” whole wheat tortillas. I generally avoid such items because I think of them as gimmicks, and it annoys me that they cost so darn much more. Nonetheless, my daughter bought them and I tried one. Totally worth it! Teaches me not to be close-minded.
