Medication cholesterol and BP

(chad) #1

Ok so me and my wife are starting keto on Monday. I’m currently on a cholesterol medication and blood pressure medication, will those effect my ketone levels or hurt me in any way?

Do i just keep taking them and go to my doc in a few months after I’ve been on keto and get tested???

You could quickly need to get off or adjust your BP medicine. My mom who’s is 8 weeks into keto just had to get off hers because her blood pressure was getting too low and she felt horrible. Now her blood pressure is perfect. Just monitor it closely and talk to your doc.

Yup, watch you BP and if it gets down there cut back on the meds. Keep good communication with your doc. He will probably take you off the meds pretty quick.
About high cholesterol-
Quote from @Bellyman
Cholesterol is one of the body’s repair tools. Simplistically speaking, it’s like a patching compound that the body will use to repair damage, the kind of damage that happens with inflammation. People villainize cholesterol when it’s building up in their blood vessels when the cholesterol is just doing it’s job of patching up places that need it. Lowering cholesterol without solving the inflammation problem is just taking away one of the body’s tools to take care of itself.

There are some other things cholesterol has going on, too. When we’re fat adapted, one of the chief transport vehicles for energy in our systems is… triglycerides, which rides on… cholesterol. Triglycerides aren’t evil either. They’re useful.

Conventional wisdom would say that because there are always firemen at fires, we need to get rid of as many firemen as we possibly can, then all our fire problems will be magically solved. Doesn’t quite work that way. Getting rid of cholesterol doesn’t either.

Two words: Dave Feldman. Google him. It’s worth the listen if find a YouTube video.

I can’t remember where I seen this, could not find the quote again on scroogle for some reason?

“Cholesterol medications could stop you from losing weight on a ketogenic diet”

How true that is remains to be seen, is not written in stone!

Thought it would be helpful to mention it for future reference if it is true?

Other peeps here may know about this?

If weighloss is your goal?

Ya weight loss is definitely my goal. I was up to 427 but through diet and exercise I’m down to 335. My wife which has stalled out decided she wanted to try keto. It looks like a good diet to me. Has anyone else heard this about cholesterol meds? I would hate for it to have a negative effect

You will probably find it’s more of a WOE (Way of Eating) then a diet really. - Diet’s generally don’t allow one to eat such great foods, with minimal restrictions. Just search Keto recipes on this site and the web.

Welcome and Good Luck!
