Meat or veg?
Edited to add: OMGoodness, Ken. I apologise. I didn’t click that link and was thinking of a completely different site! I’m removing a disparaging comment I made about it. I can’t even comment on it. Then I’ll leave the rest of my rant!
The original post is only an example of epidemiology, and shows nothing except that not all epidemiology is in favour of plant-based diets. If we’re going to discuss the potential merits of eating more plants, maybe we can look at specific claims that can be evaluated with respect to how much evidence is for and against.
For example, the epidemiology paper suggests the hypothesis the mental health could be adversely affected by a vegetarian diet. Is there any more evidence for or against this claim? It turns out there are a few more observational studies linking poor mental health with vegetarianism, but this still doesn’t add up to causation. It could be that people with poor mental health are drawn to vegetarianism, for example.
Mechanistically, there is at least one plausible reason why a meatless diet could lead to mental ill health. That’s that unless they are carefully supplemented (and quite possibly even if they are) vegan diets especially can lead to deficiencies in nutrients critical to brain function. Georgia Ede has written a lot about this. Here’s an example:
Oops edit wrong video:
Dr. Weston Price practically traveled the entire world and studied the diets of aboriginal peoples and could not find one tribe of peoples that were strictly vegetarians as pointed out by Dr. Darren Schmidt in his Veganism vs. Ketosis and meat eating. Drs. Greger and McDougall video.
Yet they (Weston Price Foundation) are a veggie org …lol
Weston A. Price found no tribes of people eating keto as constructed by modern dieters, either.
He found tribes making the best of what was available, and always finding good sources of vitamins, Be they oysters, high fat dairy, full nose to tail hunting, or what have you. None of the tribes ate muscle meat as you average zero carber does. Or even you average ketonaut. Maybe with fish.
There much of interest is the larger work of Weston A Price. And the foundation was partially founded by Mary Enig, who was a huge advocate of sat fat re-evaluation against the SAD.
Nice!
Since a Person’s name cannot be copyrighted one could start a ‘Weston Price Zero Carber Carnivore Foundation’… lol
