Measuring Keto

(Omar Agha) #1

Hi All,

New to this Keto game but it’s going well so far and I’m already feeling better. I wanted some advice as to the best way to measure if I’m in ketosis??

I’ve heard the wee sticks are not good or accurate. Would like to buy some sort of reusable (and reasonably priced) device !

Advice and pointers welcomed.

If you commit to eating 20g net carbs, you’ll eventually be in ketosis. If you deplete your glucose stores, your body will have no choice but to switch to burning ketones once it realizes you’re not going to be constantly refilling the stores. Or as I like to say, once your glucose stores are empty, you’re either in ketosis, or you’re dead.

Sincerely, someone who has never once used a pee stick or pricked a finger to measure ketones.

Aye, they’re crap.

A cheap breathalyser will do what you want, and they’re about $10 on eBay. There’s a massive thread on here about them.

But as snake-person said, there’s no NEED. Just do the right things and your body has no options.

Thanks for the swift responses. Being a Newb and a closet geek I wanted to measure progress…I’m measuring every other bloody thing right now ::joy::joy::joy:

Another Q while I’m here…regarding salt, should I add some to my 1 lite sparkling water bottles ? If so how much please ?

I’d say aim to gave 3000mg a day bare minimum with salt, get it in however you please.

I used the macro calculator on ruledme.com

Is there like a forum recomended one that every one uses ?

I bought the pee sticks but never used them. After several days of low carb high fat I realized that I can taste when I am in ketosis. Once you realize that it is going to happen if you stay below a certain level (for me <50g) you can stop stressing over it. Watch the carbs and not the meter. KCKO

Welcome Omar.

IMHO, the best measure of whether or not keto is working is you and your body. You will feel it in the form of better energy, greater mental clarity and attitude, decreased hunger, better sleep, reduced or eliminated cravings, reduced inflammation and so much more. It was truly a Eureka! moment when I started noticing those things. It was like I had been in a decade’s long trance and one day, I just snapped out of it and a cascade of positive things started hitting me, one right after the other.

Well thanks again for all the replies, you all know what its like. New diet, new regime…have to be accurate etc, have to measure, progress etc etc etc

Reading many of the many informative posts its seems as long as the carbs are low then you should fall into Ketosis !

Ive used the ruledme keto calculator and im working from that but based on maintenance numbers. Im struggling right now to get enough fat…but im trying !!

You can assume you are in ketosis or you can measure and get data. I want to know the effect of different foods on both blood glucose and ketones, so I check blood levels.

Using what ?

I use a Keto Mojo glucose/ketone meter. Product reviews are favorable. Testing strips are less expensive than Abbott Precision. Got mine on Amazon but https://keto-mojo.com/ seems to be having a sale right now

I purchased a breath tool to measure and it was very inconsistent so I went with the Keto-mojo to test blood. So if you “haveta” check… I say Keto mojo is the way to go!
