MCT oil stomach ache

#1

One thing within the world of Keto that I haven’t started doing consistently is using MCT oil. No matter how little I use I seem to get a stomach ache within minutes of eating or drinking something with a little bit of it in it. Not like a hardcore stomach ache, but just doesn’t feel good… Anyone else that way?

You are not alone. MCT and coconut oil hit some people harder in the digestive system than others. You can try smaller amounts to allow your body to try and get used to processing it better but I wouldn’t keep forcing the issue if your stomach keeps insisting it doesn’t want it.

If you want to try to keep some mct in your regimen, you could also try mct powder. Some find it less troublesome. If so, read the label! There are generally some carbs in the powder, but compare various options to get the least. Additionally, mct powder is much easier to mix with other ingredients to make a variety of stuff.

i’ll look into that powder form for sure to at least try it… good to know that i’m not alone in this stuff bothering me haha.

No, I’ve tried the oil multiple times before…can’t hack it. The powder works for me, but it’s a lot more expensive.

Hello. I have been using oil for a few weeks now. The only time I got severe stomach cramps is when I had it on a empty stomach. Maybe try half a tablespoon after your main meal? :slightly_smiling_face:

To be clear, MCT Oil is not an essential aspect to low-carb or ketogenic living. It might be your stomach doing your wallet a favor.

Haha that’s a good way to look at it. I’m down 78 lbs without it and still going strong so maybe I’ll just forget about it

The first time I tried the MCT was the vanilla flavoured powder form, I put it in a cup of coffee, and it tasted good but made me feel like I was high! It really freaked me out, (I made a post on here about it at that time, cannot find it but yes). I used just small amounts of it since then and have been fine, I guess I used too much the first time trying it.

I started using some once a day. Just one serving in some coffee. But I am using MCT oil powder. Maybe that works differently

I’m with @Screenack, if it doesn’t agree with you don’t use it. There is no single food necessary for keto. I use some coconut oil without problems for cooking, but if it messed with me I’d drop it in a hot second. MCT powder has dextrose to turn it into powder. Dextrose is refined from corn starch. It has a very high glycemic index and while it contains no fructose , it is still a simple sugar that is very readily absorbed. It is not as dangerous as sucrose but it still is a highly processed product that should be avoided. Personally I would not consume dextrose regularly on a ketogenic diet.

Completely unnecessary ditch it.
Especially if it makes you ill…

Good to know! Wouldn’t it have to be shown on the label?
There aren’t any dextrose indicators on the label. There is Stevia though and Cocoa and acacia gum, Bovine Collagen, And Monk fruit extract, and chocolate flavoring.

I prefer coconut oil with butter and heavy cream because it TASTES better. MCT oil does not bother me at all and I sometimes us it if I’m going on a long hike for fuel but it adds no flavor.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #15

Dextrose is merely glucose by another name. Beware!
