Mct oil and weight loss

(Jean) #1

I am a little confused when different articles about MCT oils. Some say use it when you are starting or get out of ketosis. Some say don’t take if trying to loss weight and others say it’s ok . Not sure as looking to still loose weight . So many MCT oils and I know you want the ones with higher 8 and 10 but is there a cheaper one that is good

If you are still trying to lose weight - you should probably skip MCT oil and eat real food instead (and spend the saved money on higher quality real food). You’ll have a much better time reaching satiety.

Companies trying to sell MCT oil will “prove” it is good for weight loss, starting ketosis, staying in ketosis etc. but - it is really just more calories.

The argument that I most agree with categorizes BPC (and the contained MCT oil), fat bombs etc. as optional extra ways you might want to add some healthy fat to your diet after you are at goal weight. In maintenance these make sense but, while trying to lose weight, its like driving around with your foot on the brakes.

I’m in this camp. I keep what’s left off a bottle around for emergency use, in case I eat something that doesn’t agree with me and get that horrible morning after that feels like a hangover. But then weight loss is a secondary priority for me, with mental clarity being top priority.

Thanks , I will pass on the MCT, just didn’t want to spend the money if it doesn’t help with
Weight loss

I don’t totally agree with @RobC MCT is like any other fat you could include on a keto eating plan. But coconut oil has a lot of MCT oil in it and it’s a lot cheaper. There are quality levels to MCT, organic, cheaper ones are processed with hexane and different MCT chain lengths, MCT-8 being the one that gives the least amount of people any gastric distress. It’s absorbed directly into the blood and gets processed by the liver effortlessly to produce instant ketones. That’s why it’s in BPC. It’s KETO ROCKET FUEL, the keto version of white sugar! Gives people instant energy in the am. Also it’s great for a mental clarity boost. Many swear by if for things that require you to be on your best foot, mentally.

It can be useful during IF or OMAD to give an energy boost or help you make it through a fasting window without eating early. You can add it to coffee and still get some autophagy even though fat burning will stop until the MCT oil is used up. But you’ll still be keeping carbs and protein out, and insulin low so some autophagy continues.

As far as what @carolT said I have heard this idea but I don’t think MCT oil puts you back in ketosis if you had a carb episode. It will still convert to ketones in the liver in the presence of higher BG levels but that doesn’t mean you’re in ketosis, only that ketones are present in the blood again. MCT oil is used in the newer version of the epilepsy diet called the MCT Diet. MCT oil is given even with moderate carbs to mimic ketosis and make it easier for kids and families to stay on plan with the therapy. They still get ketogenic brain function benefits without staying in ketosis.

All this considered I do not use MCT oil but keto is an individual thing so I don’t judge people who like to use it. It’s up to you. :cowboy_hat_face:

I use it, occasionally pour it on food to keep my oil levels up.
some foods I don’t like the taste of coconut oil on and there is a limit for how much butter I can enjoy.
The MCT is less coconutty

I have come across information that indicates MCT supplementation can help improve mitochondrial genesis and function which could be particularly useful for some conditions such as chronic fatigue/myalgic encephalomyelitis/fibromyalgia.

I have been adding it in my first cup of coffee ever since I started keto and have no idea why. I just like knowing it is in there. A big bottle lasts me about eight months.

I’ve been using it for about a year now (powdered, in my coffee) and I 100% know it did not help with weight loss directly. But you know what it did help with? And this is why I continue to use it… it helps me keep carbs out of my coffee, and keeps me full until lunch. I have been staying away from dairy too. So I put coconut cream + MCT powder + monk fruit. I do this rather than just increasing the coconut cream because the carbs can add up if you like your coffee really creamy like I do. And rather than JUST using MCT because it’s too expensive to exclusively use the amount I’d need to make my coffee creamy enough. With that all being said, it is not necessary to have MCT on the keto diet and if you don’t want to spend the money on it, there are other non-carb things like butter and coconut oil (which I hate in my coffee because it’s TOO oily).
