Maybe fell out of ketosis/fat adaptation?

(eat more) #1

so yesterday i just ate when i was hungry…my fat/protein macros were well above the norm…

this morning i was oddly starving…had bpc, putzed around, got gym ready, had my normal pre workout protein and fat, ran a couple of errands…
thank god i hadn’t made it to the gym yet…on one of my errands the salon called and my client was 3 hours early for her appt…(apparent miscommunication)
so off to the salon i go in my gym clothes (i don’t do that :scream:)
this was partially a blessing as this was a major corrective service (turned out awesome but was a lot of work) BUT…all i had was BCAA, water with a bit of salt, and string cheese in the salon fridge…

driving home i was a total dummie and had to tell myself out loud to “focus!”
i was mostly fine during my time at the salon but the minute i sat down…jello brain

with a good supply of fat/ketones shouldn’t i have been at least status quo?
shouldn’t i have been fine going 7-8 hours with just fluids and a string cheese?

i’ve eaten but i’m still feeling kind of spacey…i didn’t have any “crashes” or freak out…i was restless during processing times that i didn’t have other clients…like i couldn’t handle just waiting, i needed to be doing something

strangest day…

probably just nerves, stress?

(eat more) #3

maybe i was just hyper focused and then “crashed” when it was ok to be more relaxed?

(Mike W.) #4

How long have you been Keto? Do you wake up hungry?

#5

I’ve tested a few times with similar feelings and in some cases my blood ketones were below 0.5 mmol, technically not in “nutritional ketosis”, and other times they were 2.0+ and 3.0+, so well into the range of nutritional ketosis.

From my personal experience, I’d go with @Fiorella and just consider it an effect of stress on the cognitive state rather than falling out of ketosis in the absence of an anti-ketogenic trigger.

(eat more) #6

a little under 3 months
pretty much everyday…
which is making me wonder if i’m just low carb (under 20g/net) and not genuinely in ketosis…which i’m surprisingly ok with…but would be odd if i’m not lol

(Michelle) #7

are you testing your ketone levels?

This is kind of odd, but I wonder if it was just an anomaly. I do sometimes wake up hungry, but I drink water and go for a walk and it quickly passes. I heard on one of the podcasts that if you wake up hungry, then you are doing it wrong. :frowning2: I am still tracking all my macros, and regularly have ketone readings in the 1.2 to 1.5 range, so I feel like it’s all falling into place. We all have our doubtful days though… (newbies do anyway! ) .

(eat more) #8

nope… not gonna either…just one more number that i can avoid obsessing on :joy:

hopefully not…but if so i’ll just be the poster child for keto that just likes eating this way and maybe does it wrong
not really sure how i could eff up something so simple tho lol
i had three ppl ask me about it today…one tried to get me to start eating quinoa
pointed all of them to google and here

I’ve been keto 15 months and still wake up hungry some mornings. It usually passes fairly soon. I do have the “dawn effect” (I’m not diabetic) and suspect that combined with cortisol release is the cause.

I’m also typically in 0.4-0.8 ketone range (they only go higher if I’m fastin), which seems low but I think it is because I’ve been at it awhile. I’ve heard @richard mention several times this is his average range as well. I didn’t test my ketone levels in the first year so I’m not sure if they used to be higher.

I honestly wouldn’t sweat it. We all have off days, maybe your hormones are messing with you.

(eat more) #10

this is happening again…i’m starving…more so after bpc
it’s ticking me OFF lol

i’m also having sleeping and temp issues that are exactly the issues i had on that pre workout (5+ months ago)

inexplicably hot, then cold
waking up every 2 hours
:rage:

i want to believe that the sleep/temp business is crud being released from fat cells and that i’m doing everything “right” but the genuine overwhelming physical hunger is making me wonder.

am i eating enough? am i actually not fat adapted and i’ve just been unintentionally low CICOing it this entire time?!
RAWR :rage:

oh and i’m peeing every 3 seconds (ok i’m exaggerating but with great frequency lol)

(Ashley Haddock) #11

Remind me how long you’ve been keto? Do you focus on calories? Do you use sweetener in your BPC?

(eat more) #12

3-ish months…i stopped counting

calories no…i intentionally don’t look at the calories number on my tracker and wish i could turn it off altogether lol

AS - yes (very little)
i was starving when i woke up and figured the bpc would handle it

(Ashley Haddock) #13

What about your cycle? I can always count on being ravenous the week before my period.

(Ashley Haddock) #14

Also, 3-ish months could mean you’re still in adaptation mode. I’ve read it can take up to 6 months to be fully adapted.

(eat more) #15

not cycle related… wish it was lol

some days i’m like “man i am soooo fat adapted…look at me go!” and other days (like today) i want to eat my arm or a brand new jar of almond butter lol

#16

Yeah, definitely almond butter, been there and done that several times!

I’ll chime in because several times in the last week I felt like I had fallen out of ketosis and testing proved that my blood ketones were at 0.2 mmol, so it was below nutritional ketosis.

I thought it might’ve been 1 dose of cough syrup, so I stopped it and after getting back up to NK levels it happened again, so then I blamed it on some tumeric capsules, so I stopped those and waited, and then again felt the same way last evening when my BK are normally higher.

In the meantime, I’ve had to increase my KetoMCT to deal with brain fog.

Today, I’m avoiding AS by not drinking Diet Coke (it does not have Ace-K), and we’ll see what happens.

Whatever it is, it is very frustrating!

P.S. I’m a man and have no “cycle”.

i have to wonder if my estimated bf% is too low making my protein/fat targets too low (always comes back to this for me doesn’t it? lol) especially since i lifted heavy things yesterday
i mean i see and feel the actual fat but maybe there’s less than i think and i’m not self-supplementing enough?

#18

Or there could be the confounder from something interfering with burning body fat for energy such as elevated insulin or the dreaded “infectobesity” human adenovirus AD-36 which deliberately conserves body fat and drives calories into adipose tissue when it should be burned for fuel, like lifting heavy.

I’m not TOFI, but I consider myself “skinny fat” because I have too much subcutaneous fat around my waist (I’m sure it’s not visceral), and correspondingly lost too much muscle mass from losing weight for decades on a CICO mentality. In other words, I see the fat and wonder why it’s still there…

@mikki, maybe you have some subcutaneous fat, but you’re like @Brenda with a shitload of muscle and just need more food.

#19

Mikki, what does your food or meal regime look like from a perspective of food variety? Do you eat the same few things everyday, or a wide variety of foods?

When I get cravings, I try to understand or pinpoint what I’m craving for…what nutrient is my body calling out for.

This is why I don’t like to use vitamin supplements. I’d rather learn to listen to my body. If I am deficient in vitamin C, or calcium…I’d rather my body make me crave for foods that contain those vitamins. This way I can dial into my built in primal mechanisms, as a forager in the wild would seek out nutrients they need/crave.

(eat more) #20

i think it’s this…i do have a lot and believe it or not i don’t want more…i just want to keep what i have and uncover it :joy:

i doubled up on bpc and then had fatty chicken, cucumber, and avocado (with a lot of salt)…we’ll call it brunch

@Fiorella - totally varied but this wasn’t cravings, this was stomach eating itself, grumbling, acid hunger

i agree that cravings can tell you what you’re deficient in
