181.8!!! I’m 9.6lbs down in 6 days!

163 hours in. Noon will make 6 days. I want to go forever. I want to go long enough that I don’t gain half of it back on the re-feed.

I can’t believe how easy it’s been.

I do have a question, though. Should I attribute some of the loss to water? I would think being fat adapted would mean extra water was already cleared out. Plus I’ve been drinking a gallon of water every day. Literally, 4 quart-size mason jars a day. Any thoughts?

Presently at 62 hrs. with no issues.

I would think some, yes, but also meal weight reduction. But really neither should be an issue since you’re adding water back in as you say, and the ‘Fat’ that you do lose won’t be coming back, as say water will with hydration. - By not introducing any foods, and having your body work on the rest that’s already present, it will indeed help show better numbers. But then you will also be adding meal weight back some, as soon as you start eating again. … So I know for the most part, a lot of folks say they can usually expect to re-gain half or so of what they show as loss whilst Fasting, but I still think this also depends on the person themselves, their re-feed methods, etc. I’ve seen some say they lost something like 8 lbs in the week, and only seen a 1 lb. regain afterwards? While others indeed say they lost 8 lbs., and regained 4 or more lbs. back? - So really I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but it is just one of the reasons I don’t weigh during Fasting myself, but simply weigh every Sunday morning as I normally do.

Some really like to see those numbers and that’s great. (But it can really fluctuate at times) … For me I would rather just re-feed a couple days before I weigh, so I usually stop my Fast on Fridays at the latest. (plus I do like to eat most weekends.) I’ve always said time tells a better story, so a few days after you stop Fasting, you should see you weight resettle so to speak and see a truer loss overall.

My longest Fast was actually 136 hrs. but wasn’t really planned, but just happened while I was in the Hospital having surgery this past January. I was a few days Fasted when I went in, which was fine, but I didn’t eat for a couple days after the surgery. … I actually set a self imposed limit of 5 days for myself, even before I really started doing any EF’s. I have no rhyme or reasoning for this, just that I do start missing eating a nice meal and don’t think I need to Fast for more than 5 days. But that’s me.

I’ve also read that you can expect most of the time to loss 1/2 lb of fat per day of fasting. Remember that some fat cells will want to uptake water to remain the same size, but eventually whoosh will happen and they will give up the water. At least that is what observations have been by some.

Nurse Cindy talks about this in a funny video: https://youtu.be/xF3rmi4DJAw

Sharon are you measuring blood ketones and blood glucose?

I’ve also read/heard this to be the average as well, but I’m sure it can be up or down for some folks. But it’s a good medium for estimating.

Nah, too much math, hurts my brain. And I don’t think I could bring myself to stick my finger every day. I did it once for an at-home vitamin D test, but it was more like my mom did it for me after I had a 20-minute freak-out. I have a phobia about needles.

I’ve been considering getting a cheap breathalyzer, but honestly I’m just too cheap!

I’m pretty confident that at the length of your fast that your GKI is in a solid autophagy place. Fast on.

#435

Even if I have 2tbsp of HWC every day? I’d love for some autophagy to be happening cuz I already have an issue of loose skin.

#436

Nurse Cindy is a hoot. I’d never seen her before. Thanks for that!

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #437

Maybe. Don’t know.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #438

This is her with a very lively and informative presentation. Give it a watch when you have time. ~45 mins.

Autophagy is a scale, not an on or off switch. Low levels of it happen in our bodies all the time. You definitely have significantly increased autophagy if you’re mainly water fasting with minor added fats like HWC. You just want to avoid any significant amounts of protein to make sure you’re not counter-acting the exponential increases in autophagy that comes with fasting.

As for typically net losses from fasting: I average a 66% re-gain. But in some ways that’s a pretty meaningless number. I’ve had fasts where I lost 4 lbs. in two days and re-gained nothing. And fasts where I re-gained to the point where I had a net gain of nearly 2 lbs! I collect and calculate tons of data and it ultimately does two things. 1) Tell me that my body (like most) can be weirdly and inexplicably inconsistent, so don’t get too worked up about any one fast or week or whatever. 2) Demonstrate that I’m still on a generally downward trend at a reasonable rate.

Source please, everything I read says it stops very easily. And takes a while to get it started. If this is not the case, I’d love to see the science behind it.

But starvation is far from the only motivation for this autophagy, Ohsumi showed. Even healthy cells make use of this process to rid themselves of trash.

A new study finds that exercise prompts cells to break down unwanted proteins and other cellular junk to produce more energy. The process, called autophagy…

Fasting, of course, will kick autophagy into high gear in an exponential way. I think there are some charts in one of Dr. Fung’s videos or presentations showing that after about 36 hours there’s a 300% increase from the usual rate and then it levels off. You start at a normal low, everyday level and increase throughout the next 36 hours. But it’s not on or off. And there are studies that I’ve seen that show that fasting mimicking diets will also promote autophagy and apoptosis. One at the University of Arkansas, I think, but I can’t put my hands on it at the moment.

That’s why I really like the saying ‘Time tells a better story’ weight can fluctuate so much that it takes a little time to level out. - The way I see it, It’s almost like a watching a tidal channel or even flood waters overwhelm a levee. At some point it starts to level out, or equalize, before the flow begins to turn in the opposite direction. I think this is sort-of reminiscent of the lack of Food consumption whilst Fasting and then during the Feasting on a refeed. … I personally like to see the end result for a truer account, but I have indeed tracked before to see how much the fluctuation can be, and it can be different each time.

Forgot to mention I also broke my Fast last night sometime over 71 hrs. … Wasn’t hungry or anything, and had not issues. But the Wife had made a nice meal and she also reminded me that it seems I like to Fast, shortly after picking up a bunch of stuff that I mostly eat. Can’t say she’s wrong, but do have stuff that I would rather not go bad. So will probably do some more Fasting after the weekend.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. :+1: And I will make a new June Fasting thread here shortly.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #446

I’m looking forward to the June thread shortly. I will be fasting again Sunday evening till post surgery on Wednesday. Surgery is out patient and going to be easy. Not like @Digital_Dave 's was earlier in the year.

I have two weeks till I drive to the Ft Myer’s area for a memorial and a vacation. I’ll not likely fast with a ton of relatives around but do intend to stay my almost daily IF 18/6 ish schedule.

#447

Well I hope it all goes well for ya, Eric. And yep, I hope it doesn’t affect you like mine did for me for nearly 3 months afterwards. :+1: … And the June IF/EF thread is posted and can be found here.

(KCKO, KCFO) #448

Thanks for posting the new month’s thread. And putting the link in here.

Since it is still May, I will report that I stopped my 36 hr. fast at the 40 hr. mark. I am glad it getting easier to fast again. Hope this trend continues.
