Markers of insulin resistance

(Gorm) #1

What are the best markers of insulin resistance that also are praktical(medical studies). Is it Homa-ir, trigliceride/HDL rario…

Homa2 is supposed to be better than Homa-IR now. I can’t find much info on normal ranges though.

There is a HOMA2 calculator here. You need fasting glucose and insulin to use it.

Looks like there is no “normal range” for this but you can definitely use the result to track if you are getting better over time.

If you don’t have your fasting insulin level available there are still a number of other things you can use to determine if you’re insulin resistant.

If you answer yes to most of these questions you are likely insulin resistant.

  1. Do you have a chronic health condition such as cancer, epilepsy, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, severe insulin resistance or traumatic brain injury?
  2. Have you been diagnosed with diabetes?
  3. Is your HbA1c greater than 6.4%?
  4. Is your fasting glucose greater than 7.0 mmol/L?
  5. Is your post-meal glucose level greater than 11.0mmol/L or 200 mg/dL?
  6. Is your triglyceride: HDL ratio greater than 3.0?
  7. Are your triglycerides greater than 1.1mmol/L or 100mg/dL?
  8. Are your blood ketone levels less than 0.3mmol/L?
  9. Is your fasting insulin greater than 20 uIU/mL or 120 pmol/L?
  10. Is your C-reactive protein greater than 1.0 mg/dL?
  11. Does your blood glucose level rise significantly after eating a large protein only meal?
12 Do you have a big hard belly (fat stored around the organs, not on the surface)?

These are from an online survey in this post that can help you determine if you are insulin resistant and need a lower carb diet.
