Marathon Run on Keto

My wife and I ran an event on Dec 31. Not very well trained, so we did a 6 min run/1 min walk strategy. Started the day with bacon and eggs for breakfast, to get the fats rolling!

We started running at 8 am, temp about 35 degrees. Rolling, fairly easy course on single track and rail trail. During the run all we had was salt tabs every hour, and one Epic bison/bacon/cranberry bar at 13 miles. We use these bars in training, and they seem to give us a boost.

We ever got hungry, never hit the “wall”, kept heart rate pretty low, 120-130 pbm (I am 60 yrs old).
Neither of us had any soreness in the days following the race. We ran for about 5 hrs 40 mins. Not trying to beat anybody, although other runners took over 7 hrs.

It was my 73rd marathon or longer, my wife’s fifth.

We’re all smiles about doing it without carb feeding. This is the new normal for us.

Should have measured ketones at the end, surely they were flowing.

I love intervals for running.

Hi there! Outstanding work! I just came across this post looking for info on marathoning and keto. I started keto again last week and am determined to stick with it to help with inflammation. I started marathon training 5 weeks ago. The goal is to do the Dopey Race in January. I’m pretty concerned about going through fat adaptation in plenty of time to get a good number of long training runs under my belt while fat adapted so I can test out nutrition. This will be my second marathon. My first one I walked the entire thing due to an injury and it took me 9+ hours. It about killed me…I’m trying to avoid that this time! Any recommendations or suggestions to help me out?!

Well done! It works great if you keep your heart rate down. :+1:

I did a 50k trail run/walk once on about 75g macadamias, 75g parmesan cubes and 2 sachets of exogenous ketones (Pruvit Keto OS). When I finished I also got my highest score ever on my Ketonix. :joy:
