MAF Running

Thought I’d pass this along. This is the training method developed by Dr. Phil Maffetone who has trained some very successful athletes (Mark Allen) using a very simple method that uses an aerobic base building method getting to get the body to fuel itself on FAT, not carbs. It’s a perfect match with a keto plan. A significant benefit of aerobic base building is the ability to run faster at the same effort, that is, at the same heart rate. A heart monitor can help objectively measure these improvements using a test he developed in the mid 1980s called the maximum aerobic function (MAF) test.

I live in the central valley of CA and I’ve used this training method to build an aerobic base such that I can get into high altitudes with minimal acclimatization. Last June I got to the top of Mt. Shasta (3rd time) with NO HEADACHE. This with minimal high altitude training last year due to high snow pack. I’ve done this twice now…it works well for me. Nothing quite like this out there that I’ve found. Hope someone finds it useful. I’d like to hear what the experience of others has been.

Do a search on MAF in these forums and you will find many who have been discussing their MAF experience in running and especially cycling. You are right… it is a very good adjunct to keto.

Thanks, I did and only found one reference.

Yup, I see it now. Sorry for the excess posting.

No worries - just wanted you to see the range of insights people have already posted. I doesn’t hurt to bump the conversation so new people see the MAF concept.

Just started this today. As I am 49, my max hr is 131. I found I did a ton of walking. How long til I will be running most of my workout?

Sorry for the delayed response. Depends on a lots things. i’m 56, been keto since 2014 and could run most of the time on flats. Took me about 6 months to be able to run up hills. You are younger so you might have a quicker response time.
