I do not count macros on anything. Is this a bad practice to have? I eat in a 20/4 window and just eat until I’m satisfied. I eat protein, greens, nuts and the like no fruit. Lots of fat and I’ve lost 50 pounds in about 3.5 months. I’m not sure if I need to be doing anything differently as I only need to lose about 13 pounds to be at my end goal weight. Then it should just be management from there. Thoughts? Comments?
Love listening to the “2 dudes” they seem just like me! A little out there but in a good way. Not just the normal boring dry stuff to listen to! Keep calm and Keto on my friends!
Macros do they really matter?
Great results but, they are so dramatic that you might want to at least check your macros.
50 pounds in 3.5 months is an average of 3.3 pounds a week (or over 1,650 calorie deficit per day - every day) sustained for 15 weeks. That is a huge average daily deficit that would be difficult to explain with just keto.
I would say (heartily!) “keep doing whatever it is you are doing” but, prepare for what might come.
If, for example, you are a young healthy person that can explain away this huge daily deficit with a great keto food intake and lots of exercise - great!
But, if you have never calculated your macros and really, you are simply on a very calorically restricted regime - you might be traveling down the path of the “Biggest Loser” contestants (their average weekly weight loss was 4.3 pounds per week - so you are close to that known-to-be metabolically damaging level).
As I wrote - if it is working, you probably want to keep going - but maybe some introspection on what might really be going on will save you from some bad dietary fate (like gaining everything back as those contestants generally did).
Whether to track is an individual decision. Be open to all suggestions and work with what’s best for your temperament. Dr. Westman (I’m his patient) doesn’t care for tracking macros or using food journal software, such as cronometer or MFP. His extensive experience with his patients is the ones who stay on the longest is to keep it simple. His infamous “page 4” (what’s allowed to eat and in what quantity) is another manifestation of his application of KISS.
I’d do better to KISS, but I also love data and understanding what’s going on inside me. YMMV.
Having your body as a measure is far better than someone else’s equation, I’d allow your body to set your goal weight too. We are all so bogged down with a specific number we want to be represented by when we quote our weight.
If you don’t eat things that add carbage, you don’t need to bother tracking.
If you’re adding stuff in that adds more than incidental carbs, it’s probably a good idea to track, especially if you find yourself on a stall.
It appears you would be in the first group.
I’m definitely not at a 1650 calorie restriction as my metabolism would probably stop eating only 350 calories a day. My success is hard to explain for sure. I’ve only done two EF so far and lost 8lbs on a 3 day and 9lbs on a 4 day. I have a pretty physical job so I’m not sure I need to excercise a bunch. I’ve only been fasting for about the last 6 weeks of that. I knew I was fat adapted so fasting was easy for me. I ate 3 meals a day for the beginning.
This diet seems weird to me as I wasn’t eating less food than I normally was just different food. I love the Keto community! They are so supportive.
