Lower Blood Sugar

(Matt Fanning) #1

I recently embarked on a opened end fast. I’m currently on day 7. I’ve reached day 7 before but not without having a little something to spike my BS numbers which dipped in the 40’s. This time I’ve made 7 days without doing that but I see the downward trend and I’m wondering who has experienced this and what they do to spike it in order to keep going which I want to do. I feel great but have some reservations. Thanks

Your body will decide when blood sugar levels are too low and convert stored glycogen in the liver into glucose. This is what prevents hypoglycemia, especially when fasting. Once the glycogen runs low, gluconeogenesis takes over to ensure you have access to more glucose.

Since the point of fasting is to lower insulin, there is no need to raise your blood sugar, because that will just raise your insulin level. When your brain is fueled by β-hydroxybutyrate, it needs very little, if any, glucose. So your serum glucose can safely go quite low. If you start to feel strange, then eat, but as long as you feel okay, you are okay.
