Wanted to share my new discovery just incase y’all weren’t already aware of this. Only 5 net carb per tortilla. I feel like I’m in heaven! ! Just made a bacon wrap and it was so good!!!
Low carb wraps
What are the total carbs listed? Just wondering if they’ve added fiber and used that as an excuse to subtract from the total carbs.
Yes. But we do subtract fiber from carbs for net carbs right ? Making sure I haven’t been doing it wrong all this time
Typically, there are three things to be concerned about for “net carbs”:
- Fiber. Most forms are not digestible, so they can generally be subtracted out.
- Sugar alcohols. These vary in digestibility. Some, like erythritol, can be subtracted out completely. Others, like Xylitol and Maltitol, still have over 2 calories per gram, so should really only be half-subtracted.
- Allulose. It’s a sugar, but has nearly no digestible component (1/10th that of sugar). But because it’s listed on nutritional labels as part of the carbohydrates, there’s no way to subtract it out. But most products using Allulose will state the net carbs on their packaging.
Also, be aware that most countries outside of the USA already subtract out non-digestible carbohydrates on their labels, so you would do no subtracting. That’s why you can sometimes find nutritional labels where there are more fiber grams than carbohydrate grams.
The “total carb grams minus fiber grams” equation applies to whole foods, like strawberries, but not processed foods. A manufacturer may add fiber (“cellulose fiber” on ingredients list; I believe most commonly that’s from wood) from any source to imply a lower net carb.
Some keto folks have even thought they could “game the system” by simply consuming lots of fiber suppliments in order to create a lower net number while eating all kinds of carby foods. That doesn’t work.
This is one reason why some people simply count total carb grams. Remember, too, not everyone limits themselves to 20g. It varies from person to person and what results you’re shooting for.
Oh wow. This makes me second guess counting net carbs. So would you eat those wraps or no
I don’t wanna go over on my carbs again. did that last week with one cheat meal…and gained 3 lb water weight. Lost it back but I don’t wanna do that again. Lol. I’ll prob just let my kids eat them
I just wish our nutritional labels matched what most of the rest of the world does and just listed the grams of “digestible carbs” for the carbohydrates. Then there would be no need for any subtractions.
I eat these and they are about the same thing. I just make sure I stay within my carb allotment.
Ok. Sigh.
Fiber is a carbohydrate, it’s just not digestible.
The US lists total carbs, and then breaks out fiber as an FYI bit of info. It doesn’t matter if it’s a strawberry or a strawberry flavored taco chip. You subtract the fiber grams from the total carbs to come up with the net carbs that will have an impact on your digestion and insulin.
If a manufacturer adds fiber to a product, they also have to raise the total carb count because - refer to sentence one - fiber is a carbohydrate. The equation is exactly the same no matter how much additional fiber is added: total carbs - fiber grams = net digestible carbs.
In other countries - I know in the UK, not sure where else - the fiber carbs and the digestible carbs are considered two different things, and they are listed separately. One way to tell is to look for the word “total”. Total carbs means digestible + non-digestible carbs (fiber). “Carbs” (without the word total) means digestible carbs only. You would not subtract the fiber because it was already broken out.
Personally I think these wraps are fine on a keto diet. THEY HAVE FIVE GRAMS OF NET CARBS. There are other things about them that would make me not thrilled because I’m eating raw, organic, single ingredient blah blah blah and etc., but from a macro standpoint, they’re fine.
