Hi
I’m very new to Keto compared to many people on here. I’m 3 months in and doing well. I’ve found that my sugar cravings disappear if I am strict for a sustained period but occasionally, I do get urges for sweetness (I was a complete chocoholic before so I’m very proud of myself for getting this far). I took a Carbkilla bar along to the cinema with me recently and it threw me out of ketosis for days! DAYS!!! Are some people more sensitive to sweeteners than others? It tasted amazing but really not worth it! I felt so crappy getting back in: full on flu symptoms.
Any tips or advice? I’d love to find a brand I can go to on these rare occasions. I follow Grenade/Carbkilla on Instagram and the pictures look incredible but I wouldn’t dare try it again.
Thank you for your patience. Sorry if this question has been asked before or I’m missing something obvious. Lucinda
Low carb bars not for everyone?
They’re really not ideal. Continuing to feed sweet cravings can only lead to more sweet cravings. Not only that, but many have reported either insulin response or blood glucose going up as a result of eating these, though those reports seem to differ from person to person. I advise to err on the side of caution and avoid.
Thanks for that. I think I just need to practise self control and abstain from sweet stuff in any forms. I find weekends the hardest, especially if visiting friends or going out. So much temptation but, as I said, really not worth it as I spend the first half of the week making up for the weekend. I’m learning.
I’m English and I need milk in my tea. Full fat Milk has become my one luxury which I can get away with if the amount I use is controlled. I can ditch booze and chocolate and pastries but not my milky tea. Yep, I’m pretty rock n roll.
You are pretty rock and roll! Ditching booze and chocolate helps heaps, and it’s definitely not easy to just outright abstain from sweets especially since they are so socially acceptable. Have you ever tried cream in your tea? I haven’t had tea in quite some time so I’m no sure how it is vs. milk.
Have you tried the Arla Lactofree milk? It has about half the carbs of regular full fat.
Or of course double cream… makes tea very rich so you don’t need much… just a thought.
Good for you. I have a 40 year binge eating (and weight) history. I found that the bars either triggered my food addiction (guar or xantham gum or nuts) or took me dangerously close to T2D ( dried fruit). Or were just expensive (single mom, trying to get my kid to college)

My portable food now includes tin of oysters, beef stick (US, Chomps), Whole Avocado,

Salad dressing in a glass container (my own olive oil, vinegar), container of salt If I know I can purchase a salad where I’m going.
Best of luck and here’s to getting any sort of binge trigger out. 5.5 years. I’ve been in weight maintenance via LCHF/ mild keto/ fasting for that long after 40 years of pure struggle.
Onward. Bars are expensive marketing edible products- even the whole foods bars. I’m not a fan when real food does just fine. My daughter will attend college because I got my food and my finances and my health in line. Win-Win-Win.
Eat good meals and forget the snacks. Fake sugars can have some unwanted side effects for some people, all the way from headaches, intestinal upset, or even more of an insulin response than what it’s supposed to have.
FWIW, I miss my Bailey’s creamer in my coffee. I use some stevia and vanilla extracts, but it’s NOT Bailey’s. I’m just not gonna go back, though, because I know it’s not where I need to be. If I don’t buy it, it’s not a temptation. If it were in the house, I don’t know if I’d be as strong.
From what I’ve read, sugar cravings can happen when you’re short on potassium. I’ve also read that if the adrenals are overly stressed, foods like salmon, eggs, turkey, cheese, nuts and seeds may be helpful.
Probably not a lot of help but wishing you the best. Cravings are hard.
Thank you for sharing that: I’ve been a binge eater & comfort eater for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, my pursuit to gain control is so much more to me than looking good / losing weight. I want to be in a good place to be the best mum I can be, physically & emotionally. This forum is great. I’m finding it so motivating. Good luck with your journey. X
