Lotsa dairy... is that bad?

(Straight outta ‘Straya’) #1

At the moment I am often boosting my macro numbers in the fats department by consuming a large serve of thickened or whipping cream. It also brings my kcals up as I am afraid of letting them dip too low (I’m doing OMAD atm and want to avoid a starvation response)

However I see from time to time that people seem to be down on heavy dairy additions. Is there something I am missing? The MFP app does list my cream as having some sugar component but it seems minor. Is whatever lactic sugars there are in dairy not showing up in the app?

It’s fine as long as you don’t have any sort of sensitivity to dairy

too much milk is not keto friendly or maybe not keto at all depending on the quantity.

this is the mistake I did. 4 glasses of milk and 4 glasses of yugort. when someone ask me I say I am on keto diet.

no I was not on keto diet

cheese butter and cream are fine

Tell me more about why that is the case. Not trying to be argumentative-I just want to know more.

(Omar) #5

each cup of milk has about 12 grams of carbs.

a glass is slightly larger than a cup but let us say a glass has 12 grams of carbs because yuogort has less carbs than milk.

the example above I used 8 glasses X 12 grams/glass = 96 grams

that is way beyond any reasonable keto.

Ok but I’m drinking/eating thickened or whipping cream and My Fitness Pal isn’t showing that sugar… or is it just milk that’s the issue?

I just found a good article that broke it down for me and the why of things. Yep unless MFP is radically out I should be good as the only time I am using milk is to splash into eggs before I make scrambled eggs.

Use the cream instead! Or use butter and make them “Gordon Ramsey style” - warning, they are addictive. They absolutely melt in your mouth.

I add a lot of butter when making scrambled eggs.

Even cream has carbs. Throw out the milk and like Candy said use cream for eggs, or don’t use anything. It does nothing.

It does nothing?

Kenji Lopez would probably like to have a word with you, as would Gordon Ramsay. And LeChef.

Ok. Are you using the milk/cream to whip with the eggs or adding at the end to cool them and stop them from overcooking?

Best and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes ahead of heating gently.

Whip em. I like slightly overlooked scrambled eggs. I consider the standard way they are done as undercooked

In the original Atkins diet he only permitted 4 ounces of full fat cheese or dairy each day. I am not entirely sure why but for some people cheese and cream seem to slow weight loss. People also have sensitivities to the proteins in dairy. If that happens you get inflammation which will slow or stop weight loss. Ghee has the proteins removed so that is fine even if you are sensitive. For most people you may not realize you are sensitive until you eliminate it for a few weeks and see if anything

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #16

If you’re of Northern European or Masai descent, you can probably metabolise the lactose and galactose in milk, but too much milk will give you more of those sugars than you probably want. Cream is almost entirely fat, so the quantity of sugars in it is very low. Cheese, it varies, and yoghurt often has added sugar (!).
