Lose, loss, losing, and loose

(Karen) #1

Many people use the word loose when they mean lose, and vice versa, potentially creating confusion for the reader. (The past tense is lost. I lost my keys yesterday.) loose (“loose” = a harder “suh” sound) is normally an adjective, meaning baggy, not tight.

95% of the time, on this site, you want the word losing not loosing. Lose, not loose.

Good luck!

I missed the memo. When did "losing" become "loosing"?

Also, you are most likely looking for advice and not advise.

What are the differences between advise and advice?
Advise is a verb meaning “to give counsel to; offer an opinion or suggestion as worth following.” Advice is a noun meaning “an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action, conduct, etc.” The -ice ending of advice is pronounced like “ice,” while the -ise ending of advise is pronounced like the “-ize” in realize. ~ http://www.dictionary.com/e/advice-vs-advise/

Edited to add that today is my 1 year anniversary of joining this site and I have a little image of a steak with a candle next to my name.

Trying to correct grammar of 10,000 plus people on a forum?

Futile.
Instead, learn to accept.

I can loose my clothes as long as I don’t pay loose with the carbs.

In my mind’s eye I keep seeing people with animated blobs of fat running around them, what with having managed to let a few kilos loose.

Don’t forget about “To, Two, and Too”. There’s always Entropy and Atrophy. I swear, many mistakes are caused by Spell Checkers, I’m always having to correct mine. It’s like they’re intentionally programmed to make people look illiterate.

I don’t notice as much bad grammar on this site as on some of the Facebook groups! Some of those drive me crazy but I’d never say anything to anyone on Facebook. They’re crazy over there!
