List of Food! Need Recommendations(maybe)

(Ye boi) #1

Hi, I think I’ll be starting keto in the next few days, so I made a mental note of foods I’m going to consume. Here is the list, of course I’ll get all organic, grass fed, etc etc where I can. If anyone has any recommendations or a food on my list that I shouldn’t consume, then I’ll be happy to hear it!

Veggies:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Garlic
  • Wheatgrass Powder

Fruit:

  • Mixture of berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries etc)
  • Avocado
  • Maybe a small bit of lemon sometimes

Nuts/Seeds/Oils/Herbs+Spices:

  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Walnuts
  • Pecans
  • Maybe Chia Seeds (not sure about these)
  • Coconut Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Turmeric
  • Black Pepper

Dairy/Animal Products/Meats:

  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Butter

That’s the list  If anyone has a good probiotic or fermented food, please tell me because I don’t have access to sauerkraut, perhaps I could make my own? Also, I know to load everything with salt, I’m already doing that, even before keto

Have you checked out Marty Kendall’s nutrient dense lists of foods for various ways of eating?

The list entitiled diabetes and nutritional ketosis is the one we went for DH is diabetic, controlling via diet/exercise, I am shooting for good nutritional ketosis, so it was perfect.

I found eating pecans made me hungry later. I started using macadamia nuts instead, they are delicious, full of healthy fat, and filling. No hunger for hours after a few of those. I use them for my fasting now as I am in maintenance mode now, so when I fast, I need a little bit of fat supplementation.

So no carrots, easy on the onions, and I personally would not do wheatgrass
Easy on the berries too
Nuts I try and stick to walnuts, almonds, pecans, macadamia

If you’re just starting I would recommend you to make easy and simple for yourself. No need to go crazy to stay keto. But I have to admit that I love cooking and this have made my keto diet way more interesting, and maybe that’s why I have been sticking to it!
To your list I would add all that have been said in the previous posts and I would also add:
Veggies:

  • Aubergine
  • Courgettes and squashes
  • Bell peppers (pro tip: greens have less carbs!)
  • Radishes
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Turnip, kohlrabi, etc
  • Cabbages
  • Explore other cuisines vegetables (jicama, okra, etc) This is really exciting to do and you’ll get to try new things all the time.

Fruits:

  • Lemons, lime
  • Coconuts
  • Tomatoes (in moderation)
  • Olives

Nuts/seeds/oils/Herbs+Spices:

  • Flaxseeds and physillum husk (if you want to experiment and have some fun)
  • Almonds and almond flour
  • Coconut flour (to play around)
  • Hazelnuts
  • Frenchs Hot Sauce, Tabasco or something like that normally are fantastic and very low carb.

Dairy/Animal Products/Meats:

  • Any aversion to pork? Bacon, pork chops etc
  • Game meats: duck, veal, etc
  • Heavy cream
  • Creme fraiche or sour cream
  • Bones (marrow bone is so nutritious!)

Of course, I love to make my own fermented foods and I highly recommend it. There are a few good recipes in this forum or around internet. I make sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickle cucumbers. I think there is a recipe to make cultured butter in the recipe section.

Enjoy your keto life!!

Yes, I go easy on the carrots and berries and onions, why would you not do wheatgrass? Just curious.

Thanks, I’ll be sure to add some of your recommendations, especially cucumbers cus I love them . I don’t have any problems with pork, I was considering adding bacon but heard that pork does have parasites and stuff in it because the pigs do eat anything. Is this true?

(Ye boi) #7

I’ll check them out, thanks

Not so much these days, and it is not just pork that can carry trichinosis. Most pork produced in the USA and Canada will not have the issue, but cooking can prevent any chance of getting infected. Wild game and other undercooked meats have been known to carry trichinosis.

Oh, thanks. If you don’t mind answering another question, why is bacon so popular on keto?

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #10

Fat and protein content is good. It is great for making greens taste awesomely good. Is my reason.

(Ye boi) #11

Thanks

Wheatgrass is cultivated out of the wheat plant…little to close to wheat ie a grain. I’ll just eat some dark leafy greens.

#13

I also use macadamia nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, green beans, heavy cream, any dark leafy green, bacon, any hard cheese in moderation. Good luck!

You will also need a good salt! I like pink himalayan salt but Redmond Real Salt is also very good.
