Liquid coconut oil

(Deborah ) #1

Hello! Can anyone tell me the difference between the white, semi-solid coconut oil and liquid coconut oil? My store had both and I bought the liquid, figuring why bother with one that needs to be melted when I can buy the liquid? Is one more preferable than the other?

The ingredients don’t appear to be different. The liquid’s only ingredient is “organic coconut oil.”
Per 1 tbl: 14g fat; 0g total carbs; 0g protein
Smoke point of approx. 340 degrees.

most likely, mainly some of them have flavor differences depending upon the brand and the process to extract it.
coconut oil becomes liquid around 75 degrees.
MCT oil is refined coconut oil which always liquid.
There are a few different types of coconut oil based on the pressing but that should not make much difference on when its liquid, this much like olive oil. If you have access to a costco I buy theirs its the cheapest by far.

The liquid is more refined. This is also known as MCT oil.
It doesn’t smell or taste coconutty like the solid, but if your making a recipie that calls for coconut oil, they mean the solid stuff.
You need to be careful with MCT oil as it can cause digestive distress. You will want to build up using this. Start with a teaspoon or two and once you know your okay, go up.
I’ve never done more that a tablespoon at a time and wouldn’t. So if a recipe calls for more, I would NOT use MCT oil.
Plus I like the coconut smell and taste for some things.

Thanks folks for the responses. I’ve read about MCT oil, but didn’t realize I’d bought some! LOL! You’re right Anniegirl9, the liquid I have doesn’t smell or taste coconut-ty, which kind of surprised me. So far I’ve only used a little in my coffee. Haven’t used it in a recipe, so will buy some of the other stuff for that.

Thanks again!

I use both, so you dont think it was a waste of money. It’s good in coffee and it helps offset the binding effects of eating a lot of cheese if you know what I mean.

You probably have not bought any MCT, it is not normally in stores or at least any I have seen. I was to a store yesterday I saw some liquid and some solid if you live were its warmer I think this is pretty common.

If it were just coconut oil melted, it would still have the coconut smell. Plus, she said there were two options, liquid and solid. If it were warm enough to melt the one, the other would hav melted too. It had to be a more refined oil such as MCT or a mixed oil.

I have coconut oil which has no taste or smell it does seem to melt sooner that my normal stuff, I use that mainly for things I don’t want to taste like coconut oil.

I have a pic of the label, just can’t figure out how to upload a pic, or if it’s even possible here.

See the bottom right corner an icon with a line and an up arrow above it?

That allows you to attach photos.

I dunno I think my small jar of MCT was $20 maybe more, my coconut oil I buy for $17 in a 5 pound canister.

(Deborah ) #12

Feeling stupid here… but I don’t see anything like that on my screen. I’ve checked every icon that’s showing up.

(Deborah ) #13

Anyhow, the product name on the label is “Liquid Coconut Oil” and it’s in a clear plastic bottle.Don’t remember the cost, but definitely nowhere near $20.

First hit reply. It shows up on the bottom right of the reply box. Opposite the trash can icon and the reply button on the left.

you may not have that ability yet since you only joined a day ago, its not really important what is the brand name and were did you buy it?

(Deborah ) #16

I think you may be right – definitely no icon there. The brand is Simple Truth Organic. Got it at Fry’s Grocery store (Phoenix area).

Yes you have limited access for a little while, also you have to get some likes, which helps those will pass in the next day or so. Keep reading that also helps. Just reading online about it, this first I have seen it. Just stick to solid coconut oil in the future, its not MCT oil, but the liquid is refined more and they remove some of the beneficial things.

If it is Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Virgin Coconut Oil, or Coconut Oil it should just be Coconut Oil with different levels of refining that is generally solid at 76 degress F with minor circumstantial variances.
If it is liquid cooking/baking Coconut Oil that is fractionated Coconut Oil that has had some of the Fatty Acids removed that results in it being liquid at lower temperatures.
MCT Oil would be labeled explicitly as MCT Oil and contains only C8 and C10 Fatty Acids.

Extra Virgin vs Virgin is mostly a matter of taste where Virgin will lack the coconut taste but it is possible some benefits are lost in this refining process.
Liquid cooking version is for when you just really want it to remain liquid instead of solidifying.

There are different types of coconut oils. I used to sell them on eBay. The liquid coconut oil is refined called fractionated coconut oil. It has had some of it’s natural components removed to allow it to be in a liquid state. Basically, you’re only getting part of the whole coconut oil. There is also refined solid coconut oil that has no scent. This has been deodorized to remove it’s scent. The most complete coconut oil is virgin cold pressed which will have the scent of coconuts and be solid at room temperature. It depends on what you are using it for as to which type you would want. If it’s for cooking/baking on the keto diet, always go for virgin cold pressed.

Thank you, that is very helpful information!
