Lesser of two keto evils - Beer vs. Diet Soda

#1

Guys golf weekend coming-up and I’m torn between the new low carb Corona beer (2.x carbs per 12 oz) or diet soda with whiskey. Since I’ve been Keto I’ve been keto I haven’t had a beer (7 months) but have had whiskey and wine on occasion, no issues. Haven’t had diet soda.

Leaning towards beer as I can keep the carbs low vs. the artificial sweetener in diet soda. Anyone have any strong opinions here?

Jack and Diet Pepsi :+1:

I used to be a beer drinker (we have a farm craft beer brewery right next to my neighborhood) and if your going to splurge on having a beer, then if it were me, I would limit myself to only one and make sure its a good one, a craft type brew preferably local to where you will be. Ive never had the low carb corona but I imagine it doesn’t have much taste to it. Diet soda just has too many crappy ingredients and big Beer (lol, theres big Food and big Pharma so why not big Beer) can have some crappy ingredients as well.

I hate whiskey so I have no positive opinion on that except I would not be sad if it left this earth.

Just my 2 cents but then again, I haven’t had a beer in almost 2 years.

artificial sweeteners have been proven over and over to have no effect on weight loss, any fear of them is generally misguided.

but IMO its a wash, alcohol is a toxin, will immediately interrupt ketosis and be burned off in the liver as a priority ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT. there is a lot of booze apologism on this particular forum but there is absolutely no doubt of its effect on ketosis. it immediately halts it, in every case, every time, no matter how much some people wished it didn’t.

you may get drunker (and possibly drink less) with the whiskey, or get drunker and go completely off the rails.i wouldn’t worry too much about, do what you have to do and regroup when the hangover is resolved and CCKO

I would skip the beer AND skip the diet soda.

I would think about appreciating the flavor of the whiskey alone (or with ice/water).
If it isn’t low quality, someone put time and effort to make it taste a particular way.
In terms of keto (and to avoid potential gut health issues from artificial sweeteners) it might be best to become a whisky snob (and maybe the higher price will help you limit the amount and appreciate it more).

But (here comes the unsolicited advice :fearful:).
Your decision about which to drink is trivial compared to the decision about whether you should drink at all.
I am not talking about the direct stay-in-keto-or-not consequences.
I am talking about the likelyhood that you will become hungry and your decision making skills will be lessened (especially drinking alcohol while in ketosis).
If you are in a place without keto options and a new level of hunger pangs is reached every 15 minutes - you might say “what the hell” and end up with carby snack in your mouth (which might lead to more “what the hell - I’ve had carbs anyway tonight” thinking).

If I were you I’d focus on how the decision about whether to have alcohol or not is really going to play out.

Couple of bits of info. In terms of beer, prior to going keto my go-to beer was Miller Lite, so I’m not much of a heavy beer guy to begin with.

We’ll be playing golf in 100+ degree weather, thus not wanting to drink straight whiskey (High West Rye is my whiskey of choice), straight is is what I typically do when I do choose to enjoy a drink.

Understand I’ll be taken out of fat burning mode for about an hr per oz of booze. Don’t do this often so I’m OK with that.

Thought about cannabis but I can’t play golf high like I can with a couple of drinks in me.

how about whiskey and Zevia? It’s sweetened with stevia.

Diet Soda is the lesser of the evils.

Interesting, looks like a store nearby carries this. Soda and sparkling water with stevia. May have to try a sparkling water with some vodka! Sent this to a friend who is new to keto and she’s struggling with not drinking diet soda. Thanks!

Scotch. Straight up.

Rajseth, you are my hero!

Also, find a good bourbon or whisky, and enjoy.

The first year I was LC I didn’t have one beer. When I started enjoying the occasional beer(s) I noticed my palate had changed quite a bit. But some beer still tastes good, just different from what I liked before. That being said, I learned the hard way what people who complain about painful bloating were talking about. For about 4 days after I drink beer I feel like my intestines are pumped full of some noxious gas and clamped shut. To a lesser extent with lighter beers but it’s noticeable with any type of beer and not terribly fun. Needless to say I avoid beer most of the time, you’ll feel a lot better if you stick to the hard stuff. Try some gin and lime La Croix for example.

For me personally I drink both and have had no problems with either. I drink Michelob ultra or Miller lite (haven’t tried the new corona yet) and I do drink diet soda every now and then. Yes I know the diet soda isn’t good for you because of the artificial sweeteners and yes drinking alcohol isn’t good for you in general however these are things I do enjoy having.

Try it before you buy more than one. For me, there is no whisky so rot-gut that I would add Zevia.
YMMV

The last drink I had was vodka in seltzer with a squeeze of lemon. I have to admit it’s very weird to have a “mixed” alcoholic drink that doesn’t taste sweet - and not all that thrilling, truth be told. Not bad, just not something I felt any need to binge on. I had one drink and that was enough. If you’re drinking off the course, champagne and dry red wine are both good low-carb no-added-sweetener choices.

I have entirely lost my tolerance for alcohol (through abstinence before and throughout keto) so even a couple of social pints has me drunk like a schoolgirl on Babycham! (for UK drinkers of a certain age).

As for Soda, after cutting right down on keto, when I do have one, I find it pleasant but so sweet that I can’t guzzle it like I used to… taking sips and nursing one can for a while (too long since it goes warm and flat). I have to find other ways to hydrate these days (water/tea/water with a splash of flavor like Mio or squash). I would certainly say soda over beer but if you keep it to Lite beer, you won’t really know the difference :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Wife brought me a six pack of Zevia, not bad. I’m not a soda guy but I could see tossing some Vodka or Rum in it (I wouldn’t waste a good whiskey in it). Think I may have my answer, a six pack of Zevia and a flask of Vodka or Rum.

I would definitely go for the ultra lite beer over the diet soda. The artificial sweetener in most diet drinks is nasty. Zevia might be the exception. My daughter tells me that there is a new beverage available in the liquor store in Alberta that is just Vodka and flavoured sparkling water. I will be trying that as well as drinking Molson’s Canadian 67 which only has 67 calories and about 2 gms of carbs. I rarely drink alcohol anymore but I like to have it at New Years and on holidays.

cannabutter straight up

I remember it well. Was particularly fond of brandy and babycham…if funds permitted. Oh and the cherry on a stick :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
