Lentil soup

(karen) #2

How many servings did this make?

(Ron) #3

Close to 20g carbs, that would be my whole limit for the day. :hushed: And I still cannot get past the Cha Cha Cha Chia food thing.

I counted a total of 40 net carbs, and if you divide it into 10 servings it would be 4 carbs per serving.

Lmao… I hear ya! I get a giggle every time I scoop some out. “Cha cha cha chia… The Chia Pet! Chia Head, Chia Lamb, and now introducing… Chia Keto!”

(karen) #6

Excellent! What did the chia seeds do? I have to admit, drinking them in a shake was a once-in-a-lifetime experience if i have anything to say about it!

(Ron) #7

Well there ya go, two cups of soup would be about 1/2 a meal for me so I guess I’m out of luck.

(Ron) #8

I hear that!:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I started putting them into my zero carb energy drinks. Let them absorb for about 30 minutes or so in the fridge. Makes an interesting drink, and texture. I had to halt this as I began to get stopped up. So now those little seeds are every once in a while.

(karen) #10

well 3/4 c lentils is about 16 net, plus 2 for the chia and maybe 2 for the onion, so 20 net carbs / 10 servings = 2 carbs per. That’s not so bad even if you have 4 servings! (especially if you eat around the chia seed goo.)

#11

Thickens the soup. Otherwise you’d need more lentils to make it thick.

(karen) #12

Fortunately my chickens love them. They get chia seeds, I get eggs, works out nicely for all concerned.

(Ron) #13

I think I will stick to my carbs coming from cheese, cream, eggs, etc. The easier the better now days.:pensive:

(karen) #14

How much water / how thick is this / any tricks? My shake was sort of … like globs of jello, if jello had no taste and little black specks in it. Obviously not a win but maybe I just had the proportions wrong.

#15

A lot of water. You add water as it cooks down so you just have to watch and see if it gets to the right thickness. I made it so it was the perfect soupiness for me.

(karen) #16

Ok, maybe I’ll give this a shot. I do like lentils and have a bunch that have been exiled post-keto, using a low carb thickening could be just the thing. Thanks!

This sounds like something my daughter would like. I’ll have to remember this. There was also a recipe for pumpkin spice chia pudding I wanted to try.

I’ve been using chia seeds for several things. I especially like them in meat loaf instead of bread or pork rinds.

Here’s a link to my post about it

Happy to hear these uses for chia seed! I’ve been using psyllium husk as a filler and not that excited about it, I feel like it can dry things out, especially bready things. I’ll have to do some experimenting.

(Consensus is Politics) #20

I have read that chia seeds can be ground into a powder, and be more readily used like psyllium husk is. I have yet to try it.

My experience with chia was the exact opposite- filling the toilet bowl like a bursting dam. Never again!
