Lemon tastes sweet

(Gabe “No Dogma, Only Science Please!” ) #1

Maybe I just got a uniquely sweet lemon yesterday, but as I was cooking up some lemon butter fish, I tasted the fruit and it was delicious. And it’s not like I don’t eat sweet stuff; I eat 70-90% dark chocolate, Quest bars, homemade concoctions with allulose, stuff like that, and I know it’s not great for me but I usually have something sweet every day. So it’s weird, 2.5 years into LCHF, to notice lemon tasting sweet.

Anyone else have this experience?

Sometimes. Lemons really do vary in their sweetness.

To be honest, though, I really prefer the more sour ones. Not sure why. I use lemons in my water all the time. I tried a Meyer lemon a while back thinking I would like the added sweetness. I did not. Went back to a traditional lemon right after.

I’m odd that way. I like sweet things. But I tend not to like sweet tastes in things I expect to be savory or where the sweet seems out of place. I guess we’re all a little unique in that regard.

Maybe you had a Meyer? Meyer lemons are smaller, thin-skinned and a little sweeter (less sour?) than your average lemon. I’ve never tried them but a friend who used to live in Cali raved about them and said they make the best lemonade.

I haven’t had a sweet lemon yet, but natural Greek yogurt now tastes sweet to me whereas it used to set my teeth on edge a little!

No doubt cutting out processed sugar has awakened our taste buds. There’s at least 4-5 foods that I eat now that I couldn’t stand before and even regular table salt tastes funny to me now.

I’m certain that’s what is… I’ve also found I really enjoy the experience of eating or drinking bitter things. I have now changed my coffee roast and moved to 90% chocolate for this reason!

Like @CarlKeller suggested you almost certainly had a Meyer lemon. They are a deeper shade of yellow and more round than football shaped (American football that is!). The flesh inside is also deeper in color. However they suck for lemonade in my opinion because they don’t have enough acid. They make great lemon curd and I have a giant glass container full that I pickled in salt Moroccan style. They are great chopped up and put on fish.

I’d rather suck a lemon than eat Quest bars. Don’t know how you do it. Those things taste godawful!

Agree that most flavours aren’t great. But the mint chocolate one is quite good indeed. Straight out of the fridge, quite delicious with a glass of almond milk or herbal tea!

Broccoli is sweet to me.

Will have to try that next time I’m on the road and in need of a snack. I tried the Choc fudge one and it had the texture (and taste) of crayons and wet sand.

I was making a dish with lemon yesterday and the smell was so mouth watering. I started adding it to my sugarless flavored tea in a bottle and SO YUMMY!!

I wonder if it’s bad, since cravings + yummy is usually bad. :weary:
