I’ve just seen an Attenborough documentary on plants that suggests that they can hear and transmit sound through their root systems. Which means they may be able to communicate among themselves, does this mean they may have feelings and therefore we shouldn’t be eating plants as well? OMG what are Vegans gonna do now?!!!

Trees can “communicate” using chemical messengers. See, eg:

Other plants can supposedly communicate similarly, e.g., to let other plants know their are pests.

I thought the Lierre Keith book was really good. She documents how growing plants means death for a lot of animals and insects.

There’s a book called TheSecret Life of Trees that’s along those lines too. Interesting stuff.
I would say there’s parts of a plant that they don’t mind, or even encourage us to eat to spread their seeds. The there’s parts they protect with chemical defenses.
