Kombucha Bad or Good?

(Peter Cook) #1

Hi,

I’m about 2 weeks into nutritional ketosis.

I’ve found that I’m really enjoying Kombucha as something that tastes good and at least according to my Keto-Mojo meter doesn’t seem to knock me out of ketosis.

Still, the label says it does contain some small amount of sugar. And everyone also keeps telling me there is sugar. So I’m wondering if anyone else has thought about this.

Here is the brand I drink: [https://jet.com/product/detail/362b09612afb4ce0b27a105aabe0dd33?jcmp=pla:ggl:lowp_fresh_cons_gen_grocery_a3:grocery_beverages_fresh_juice_fruit_drinks_a3:na:PLA_1143406719_50480474782_pla-423071640659_c:na:na:na:2PLA15&pid=kenshoo_int&c=1143406719&is_retargeting=true&clickid=302f79ac-a8cf-454e-a9ef-c4402cbd839e&kclid=302f79ac-a8cf-454e-a9ef-c4402cbd839e&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrLXXBRCXARIsAIttmRMKlXjaJ1ggCcQ4UAD0i7Gd1I5xWg5PJXhvliTw6ZmtxwNnhuzQzlMaAsxnEALw_wcB](http://Synergy Kombucha)

If it is fine for ketosis, I highly recommend it!

Thanks!

I drink GT’s Kombucha everyday, but I don’t have an entire serving because of the carbs and I drink the Multi-green variety which is made with sea weed and spirulina so it contributes to my nutritional needs while giving me a nice little fizzy sweet treat during the day.

Yeah, sugar triggers insulin and we don’t want that, but there’s no reason why you can’t have half a serving of fermented teas with natural fruit sourced sweetness and still be in ketosis.

Remember, balance and nothing to the extreme.

I hope you find this helpful
Keep calm and keto on

As it is a fermented product, like yogurt, some sugar must have gone into its production. I suspect it works like yogurt, where the sugar decreases over time as the live culture bacteria eat more of the sugar. If it’s not kicking you out and it’s working, I wouldn’t mess with it. Count the carbs, assume you’re counting more than you’re intaking, and rest easy.

By carbs do you mean the sugar. Or is there some other source of carbs?

Welcome to the forums!

Starches are carbohydrate, and so is fiber. The insoluble fiber is not digestible, so a lot of people disregard it when counting their daily carbohydrate grams. (You will notice a fair number of posts about whether to count total or net carbs—this is what they are debating.)

BTW, in certain countries, the government-mandated nutritional information on food packages gives net carbs; in others, total carbohydrate, and you have to do your own arithmetic. I understand further that various online apps count carbs differently, so be sure you know how it’s handled in your country and by your app of choice. You also need to be careful about portion size, because in the U.S., at least, if they pick the right portion size they can say 0 grams of carbohydrate, but if you eat several portions the carbs can mount up. Read the ingredients list carefully!

It looks like yours has 14 g carbs per bottle and doesn’t say any is fiber.

I’ve never tried this beverage, what’s it taste like?

A friend gave me some homemade kombucha earlier this year. I really enjoyed it, but it tasted sweet to me. I suspect that not all of the sugar was used up by the fermentation processes. I didn’t drink very much of it, though I really wanted to drink more.

My notes for that day showed blood ketones at 4.3 and blood glucose at 96 prior to drinking the kombucha. Two and a half hours later, blood ketones were at 2.6 and blood glucose was at 99.

I also enjoy FT Kombucha in half servings, and generally fill the rest of the glass with ice and seltzer water. My faves are the Original and the Gingerade.

It’s your N=1, and if you want to drink a little kombucha daily, just track the carbs. My friend @9256 (Collene) drinks some daily, and she is having no issues with staying in ketosis.

The variety that I enjoy is made by GT. It’s labeld ‘GT’s
Kombucha’. I drink the Multi-green variety. It’s sweet and fizzy. The half a serving I consume everyday has 4g of carbs and contributes to my mineral intake via sea weed and spirulina.
