I did Atkins low carb a few times since the early 90s, I lost weight but never got to my goals because of fear of kidney damage, fear of fat and cholesterol. About a year ago I found the Alternate Day diet where I ate 500 calories Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and I ate 1500 calories on Tuesday and Thursday and Sunday, Saturday was my free day, anything I wanted. It was successful as I was at 213 and got me down to 195 and then plateaued, and I was tired of starving! I found the 2ketodudes podcast and randomly picked an episode and at the first part of their talking they said ‘if this is your first time listening and you are new to ketogenic diet, you need to go back and listen to episode 1’, and I did. I started keto about December 5th, 2017, and I was at 205, now down to 191, 12/21! I am in moderate ketosis according to my ketone strips, and I love, and my body loves keto food! I have been eating more beef than normal though, and that caused a gout attack in my knee. Crap happens, hopefully once I get fat adapted that kind of inflammation will go away and never come back! Another issue my fiance and I have (She started keto 12/19), is that we are team truck drivers, we are usually home every week for a couple of days and then head back out, usually to California and back southeast. Eating and truck driving is an unhealthy mix. I have shrunk my eating window from 1 to 7, and not snacking because really I’M NOT HUNGRY! WOW! We bought keto snacks and we split keto meals. We are looking forward to the challenges and the success we are facing on our keto journey and lifestyle! I am a type II diabetic with high blood pressure and on the medications associated with those ailments. My A1C was pre diabetic on my last doctor visit, my triglycerides were high, cholesterol at the above ideal range and HDL cholesterol was low. The last thing my doctor said (She is a young doctor)was ‘Watch your carb intake!’ I believe she will be excited at my weight loss and improved bio numbers! I have relatives and friends starting keto January 1st, 2017. I am 5’9" tall and ‘Big boned,’ so my goal is 170, even though my suggested weight is 145 to 168, I don’t want to be a rail.
Kinda newbie
Welcome. Props to your doctor on the carb comment. Glad to hear you’re making progress. I don’t know much about gout but probably some people in the forums who could offer tips
Personally I find fasting while traveling in shiny metal tubes makes things so much easier. Which is, incidentally, much easier to do when eating a ketogenic diet.
KCKO!
This has been the most painful gout bout I have ever had, and in my left knee. I know beef is the culprit. I have been eating more beef in the last 2 weeks than I have had in 3 years. I love beef but it imparts more uric acid than most other foods. At least that is what my old VA doctor said, I need to research that myself unless someone else already did. It’s excruciating pain, ugh.
I wish Carl and Richard the 2ketodudes would do a podcast on Gout, and get a specialists involved.
Update on my knee, after drinking lots of water and acv water the pain and swelling have decreased, I think it will be back to normal in a few days. The way I feel and the weight I have lost is worth the inconvenience of my gout prone body. Only red meat if I over do it triggers my gout attacks. All the lobster and shrimp or fish I have ever eaten never caused a gout bout with me. I can eat pork, chicken and all manner of fish and shellfish without an episode of gout. But if I eat beef too frequently it will trigger my gout. I hope once fat adapted and my uric acid levels decline my gout flares will be a thing of the past. Don’t quit keto, just modify your keto diet to avoid gout flare, one can probably figure out their triggers if one thinks of what they have eaten in the 2 weeks prior to a gout attack. KCKO
KCKO !

I figured out, beef puts out omega 6 an inflammation cause, and I need to take omega 3 to counter it.
From WebMD
The proper ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids, which are another kind of unsaturated fat, helps control inflammation in the body. … Consuming fish oil can help correct this imbalance and reduce inflammation, thus decreasing the pain, swelling, redness and joint damage associated with gout.
My knee pain is nearly gone. With only Aleve for pain and fish oil supplements, and acv water. KCKO
I got the audio book ‘The Obesity Code’ and finished it last night. Dr. Jason Fung did say fasting does raise uric acid levels, so if one is prone to get gout, like me, try taking a good fish oil, good unfiltered apple cider vinegar and anything else associated to fight inflammation, uric acid, omega 6s, etc before fasting. I think my intermittent fasting 8:16 And 6:18 may have been the culprit throwing me into a gout attack. My left knee gout pain is gone but now my left foot/ankle maybe gout flaring but not sure yet. I am taking my preventatives so I hope they keep gout away. The fasting tool for health and weight loss is too valuable for me to throw in the towel.
