Ketostix- Intervention needed!

Hey gang,

I’ve been Keto for 3 weeks tomorrow. Since I started this WOE, I have been overzealously testing my urine for ketones. At least 3 times per day.

Yesterday morning I tested when I got out of bed and had large ketones. Then through the day they dropped to light followed by trace…

I’m also sick with a cold and don’t have much of an appetite but I am eating only high fat right now.

Alternatively the cold has nothing to do with what my body is doing which is hopefully starting to fat adapt- I can’t remember if I read somewhere that’s what happens with the Ketostix when you fat adapt- I don’t know. I do know I can have a BPC in the morning and not feel true hunger until mid afternoon.

I am well below my carb macros- I’m usually 5-15g/day. I have not “cheated” at all, not even at Thanksgiving.

I still have some gnarly ketone breath.

If anyone has any thoughts on the topic I would love to hear them. Also- I have about 10 stix left and I don’t intend to buy more.

Urine strips are highly unreliable. They only show the excess ketones your body is getting rid of and does not tell you anything about being in ketosis.

Trust what your body is telling you, not those strips. Do you feel better? More energy, clarity of mind? If you’re staying under 20g net carbs, you’re in ketosis. Don’t worry so much about chasing a color on a strip, just worry about keeping carbs low, fat to satiety, and getting as close to protein macro as you can.

Yeah they are not the most reliable. I do have a way to get more for your money though - cut them in half.

Hi Lonnie!

I’m only eating when I’m hungry, I am coming up a bit short on protein but not terrible. I have been well under 20g/carbs/day.

Thanks for the quick reply! Once these sticks are gone, I’m not buying more.

Daisy you are a genius! I bought a pack of 100, the mental image of me cutting them ALL in half has me laughing.

As long as you’re close to protein, it’s the most important to try to meet. Protein is a goal, carbs are a limit, and fat is delicious.

Sounds like you’re doing fine, just keep it up!!!
