Ketones at 5 and I’m not fasting?

(Cindy ) #1

Hi I’m a little scared. Just tested my ketones and they were 4.9 retested and 5.0. I’ve never had levels this high even when fasting. Glucose was 73. I recently gave up dairy. I had breakfast at 9. Thoughts?

What precisely about that reading scares you?

If you are a Type I diabetic concerned about diabetic ketoacidosis, then you probably need to ask your doctor to increase your basal insulin dose. Otherwise, I am not clear what your concern would be.

I’m normally 1.1-2.4 maybe after 42 hours of fasting 4. Just not fasting and this is new territory for me. I’m not diabetic, I have been stalled for 4 weeks, maybe giving up dairy was a breakthrough.

What is you range for ketones?

What’s your testing method? Blood, breath, or urine?

#6

A bit unexpected of a jump, yea. Just keep an eye on it for a while, I’d say. You don’t want to get to 10, but I haven’t heard of non-Type 1 diabetics getting that high yet.

How are you measuring this, by the way?

(Cindy ) #7

Thanks. I wouldn’t think twice If I were fasting… my gki is .83. I used Fora ketone blood meter

(Cindy ) #8

Hi, blood, Fora ketone meter.

(mole person) #9

Did you measure at a different time of day from your usual?

Below is a link to a detailed list of dairy products and effects on Keto.

You might have always potentially been at a 5 on the blood ketone meter and one or more of these have been holding you down (vs. some sudden worrisome jump just now).

Also, I’ve seen lots of people mention that dropping dairy made a big difference in the progress - if you can drop dairy, probably a positive game-changer.

(Cindy ) #11

Hi Rob, Yes, I dropped dairy Monday, I had been stalled and was seeing my glucose in the 90’s quiet a bit lately. I heard @carl mention he had dropped dairy and I’ve been thinking about since. So, I had to let dairy go, not the end of the world. Still eating butter (as I think I react to casein)! I would say the only thing different today was I was really hungry in the morning, so I listened to my body and ate. I’ll take my numbers in an hour I just finished dinner.

Looks like nice strong fat burning to me. No problems here.

Your fine and fat adapted. As long as you feel good continue what your doing.

[1] “…Testing while fasted can be a great way to determine your baseline ketone levels. …” …More

[2] “…At this post-waking time, test results will give you a good baseline level of ketosis in a fasted state. If your ketones are 1 mmol/L or higher during your anticipated lowest levels of the day, that’s good news; it means you are most likely in a deep state of ketosis…” …More

I did a blood test today because I had a couple of beers last night while watching basketball. Mine was at 4.7. I thought that was good. :man_shrugging:

Is your pancreas producing insulin? If so, there is no need to worry about ketoacidosis.

If you are a Type I diabetic, however, you mght wish to call your doctor to discuss raising your daily dose. Although, realistically, diabetic ketoacidosis doesn’t even begin to be a concern until your ketones reach double the number you measured.

(Jim) #17

@PaulL Not sure if that is directed at me or the OP. If it’s me, I’m in very good health. Definitely not a diabetic. But today’s blood test was even higher.

It was directed at the OP. Sorry for the confusion.

There is nothing wrong with reading a 5. My highest all time number was a 4.5. My normal is a 2.5 but I try to get it into 3.5 if I can for the mental focus, I love the way I feel at 3.5 and I can tell what my ketone level is without testing just by the way I feel. The myth about “going on keto can put you into keto acidosis” is absurd and unless you are diabetic you shouldn’t have to worry.

(Jim) #20

I’m assuming my numbers have been high the last two days because I had a couple of beers during the basketball games. I read it can deepen ketosis but slow weight loss. OP, had you had any cocktails?
