So I started back up Keto 3 days ago. I have dabbled, but never really commited. I bought some test strips and they are already medium purple. I drank a lot of water today too. Seems a little quick to me. I have been intermintent fasting of about 18 hours and my meals have been mostly fat. The last few times I have tried getting into keto the strips would turn color, but I never felt the positive effects of more energy or losing 7+ lbs of water. Thoughts. I need a NSV. Because I havent lost the water weight, nothing is even fitting better.
Ketone Urine Strips / Motivation
The ketostrips are notoriously inaccurate, and beyond a binary "ketosis yes/no, I don’t value what they say. A person can indeed go into ketosis overnight, so that part is not surprising at all. Dropping water weight also depends on your hydration status when you started. If you didn’t have a ton of extra water, you might not see a massive shift immediately. But you are indeed in ketosis, so celebrate that! Give the diet time to work.
Well I am trying to eat one meal a day. I might have some BPC with a tblspn of butter in the AM. For dinner I have a homemade ceasar made mostly of mayo a little parmesan and lemon juice. The last two nights have included a 1/4lb elk burger with cheddar. Thats about it. When have a craving its a tblspn of butter or cream cheese.
Seems your meal is ok, unless the extra cream or cheese is adding excessive carbs.
You just barely started keto, so your body is likely not yet “fat adapted”. It usually takes weeks to get to that point.
While you are not yet fat adapted, you may want to consider eating more than one meal a day. Just to step into “fat adaptation” zone. Once you reach that point, cutting back on meals is easier as hunger tends to disappear, less need for snacking or supplementation with fatty stuff, like BPC. Phinney offers the advice of not fasting, but instead, really pushing your body to get into fat adaptation. This takes patience though…need a few weeks to get there.
Yes, notoriously inaccurate is a great description. Think of them as a bit of fun for the first couple of weeks but that’s about it. As long as you pee is pale in colour I would;t worry about the dark colour on the stick (which can indicate dehydration).
Good luck with your onward keto journey.
also, isn’t eating so little detrimental to us? Our metabolism slows down when we reduce our caloric intake like that and believe me, you don’t want to do that. This is the whole yo-yo syndrome. you reduce to lose, then you can’t help but gain when you go back to a normal way of eating. That’s why all those skinny people can eat so much, they’ve never deprived themselves so their bodies burn what they eat.
You’re making a lot of assertions, but you aren’t providing any data. How exactly is not eating a lot detrimental, and for how long? What exactly do you mean by metabolism slowing down? What science do you have to support these claims? Define “normal” eating, and consider whether going back to “normal” eating is a given like you presuppose. I think you might also wish to examine your last statement and consider whether it it is deserving of more nuance before offering it up as a pat explanation.
