Ketone meter question

(joe) #1

Ketogenic newbie here so please bear with me. 55 yo male with ~ 40 lbs to lose. Was always able to cut weight in my younger days with low fat diet and exercise. No longer works. My son (3rd year medical student) said cut the carbs. So about 2 weeks ago I jumped in with both feet. After researching the methods, I immediately started a 75/20/5 % diet with moderate exercise. Lost 5 lbs the first week (probably mostly water); but I do feel a lot better. I ordered a ketone meter from keto-mojo. (no lectures please about unnecessary testing. LOL) When it came in last night my reading was 3.8 mmol/L. This seemed kinda high. It was well after working out; and I’m not doing any fasting. Thoughts?

I suspect your body is still so new to this it hasn’t figured out how to use ketones efficiently. So that’s why it is higher than expected

I didn’t buy the meter but every time I tested in the beginning with the pee stix( I know not very accurate) I was in deep purple range.

TBH I maybe checked once a week.

The level will fluctuate throughout the day. Don’t worry about it. Ketoacidosis doesn’t begin until three or four times that level, and is next to impossible if your pancreas is producing any insulin at all.

I have a Keto Mojo as well, my numbers range between 2 and 3.5 throughout the day.

I use the pee strips and still get a reading of about 6 mmol every day that I am strictly keto after 2 years.

I’m 8+ months in strict keto and my readings are around 1.5 even 26 hrs fasted. But I have some insulin resistance to reverse still. I suspect mine will go up more as my BG goes down some more. Everyone’s ketone levels are different.
