Have watched on YUTUBE various comments…phew… if its true,
one happy lady here…any comments???
Keto WHOOSH
It has been true for me. If I go to the bathroom a ton then I always lose the next day.
I think the whoosh is an unexpected weight loss - maybe caused by the various flushings of the system. If I knew what caused it, I’d be doing those things. 3 months in and no whoosh for me.
CatGirl
I think I had a Whoosh last week, but didnt know then what it was. One day I was 98kg and the next morning I was 96kg,!!!
I didnt know whether to kiss the scales or throw them out…lol lol
After checking on YUTUBE I know now that it was the cells letting go of the water.
Huh, never heard of the term. It sounds like a bowl-movement thing. I lived it, though. Bloody awesome and inspiring.
However, @Kadunka, don’t be discouraged if you don’t have this whoosh thingy. LCHF is still the way to go.
It may look good on the scale, but I feel like losing water is not as good as losing fat.
when those fat cells shrink (they never go away for good) it’s actually extremely common for water to swoop in and take their place.
But eventually, if you stick with your diet and exercise goals, they’ll suddenly release (WHOOSH), almost overnight, and you’ll notice significant weight loss and physical changes to your appearance.
Oh, so true. But to the neophyte, it can be exhilarating, or discouraging, if it doesn’t happen.

I wonder if we’ll ever figure out how to get rid of those pesky fat cells after they’ve been deflated (Coolsculpting?). Of course, now I think there’s research saying we can add fat cells in adulthood.
Sigh. The battle…

Hey CatGirl, my daughter and I did a weight loss study about 20 years ago for UCSD. What they found is that we stop making fat cells around the age of 12 or 13. Then after that they have the possibility to grow or shrink, but we make no more after that age.
I’ve always had a problem with the theory that fat cells never go away. I find it hard to believe that I have the same number I had when I was several hundred pounds heavier. Anyone have the actual scientific proof on the concept? I just think that part of the loss process is to fill them with water until the body determines it no longer needs the structures, and then eliminates them along with the water, hence the Whoosh.
I’m with you Ken. Cells die. I’m not sure if they were replaced one for one, but when they are replaced if you’re on keto diet, they were replaced with cells that are more insulin sensitive. At least I think that’s right
According to the link I posted, they have changed their thinking on that.
“In 2008, a study published in the journal Nature said adults don’t grow new fat cells.
That was nice to hear.
The battle of the bulge might seem a little more winnable if we know there won’t be any new enemy troops.
Now, a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says
adults can develop new fat cells.”
That’s kind of what I remember reading too. The good news is if your keto I think your fat cells are insulin sensitive
Well after getting up to pee 5 times last night and I mean a full exploding bladder each time…I awoke to the scale which said I was 4 pounds less!
What I’ve learned is that the human body is over 60% water, and we’re constantly cycling water - varying according to hydration levels (salt intake is so critical, esp in keto), stress levels, hormonal cycles, and the phase of the moon (the ocean tides have huge ebbs and flows, for example). Fat cells slowly change over weeks and months by emptying of fat (which mostly gets exhaled out via CO2 and some is excreted) by slowly switching out fat with water, before they collapse!
SWOOSH
I just had another swoosh myself -facilitated by a super low stress time apparently!
Nurse Cindy explains it great.
I dunno about the whoosh effect, but I seem to do something odd every 2-3 months in that I’ll have a couple of weeks where weight loss accelerates (slightly), however at the same time my %fat goes down and %muscle increases quite markedly. It’s as though there has been a sudden burst of fat burning - I can’t link this to anything dietary or exercise related, just KCKO-ing. N=1
