Keto/South Beach/Atkins

#21

Atkins was very ahead of time. I think it is remarkable how right he was on many things, not all, What I am doing now would fit fine as Atkins but as someone said it was very prescriptive on exactly what carbs to eat when

I’d be wary of comparisons you find on the Internet. Some might be valid, but many are just fluff.

My experience/interpretation is as follows:

When summarizing keto for people, I tell them it’s much like Atkins but updated, taking recent scientific findings into account.

As for the other differences, I think Atkins spelled things out more (Phase I, II, etc.), and tried to make the carnivore diet seem less weird (you can eat salads and substitutes/fakes, and someday you can eat fruit). Remember he was writing in pre-Internet days when most people didn’t have the access to research findings, or exposure to real/regular/sane people who fast, or who eat raw meat, etc.

I soon learned that incorporating more carbs (as in Atkins’ later phases) would never work for me. I did great on Atkins for almost a year–until I succumbed to peer pressure at holiday time.

I would do Atkins again, except I figure I might as well take advantage of the new knowledge available in the keto discussions. Also, there seems to be less online support for Atkins followers.

When I researched South Beach, I saw that it included a lot of carbs. I can’t do that–carbs make me hungry and there goes the diet.

This seems to undermine the strategy of Keto. We are all consuming tons of fat. Tons of fat and stay under 20 carbs and you lose weight. What am I missing here?

(Running from stupidity) #24

Once you become fat-adapted, your appetite is likely to diminish. Mine crashed, and I have to plan carefully to eat enough on non-fasting days so that I don’t let my BMR start creeping down. At that point, eating fat can decrease.

But for the first couple of months, smash the keto food. Helps the body learn what it’s supposed to be burning.

I do not understand how you can be in Ketosis and not losing body fat/weight.

(Pete A) #26

I am losing what’s left, hence the tightening up. I’m also building muscle, all slowly but surely. I eat more calories now than on the way down and it’s all mostly anecdotal. What keeps me going is how much better I feel overall.

I dont really overanalyze it much. I love the food so it works! :grinning:

Without reading all of the comments, my understanding was that it was extremely similar except Atkins allowed more protein?
Or am I totally ignorant? Lol

(Running from stupidity) #28

Nope, this time you’re pretty right, but then Atkins was about also adding carbs back in.

(Katie the Quiche Scoffing Stick Ninja ) #29

Fuck that, to put it simply.

ā€œHow to regain all the weight you lostā€

(Jane) #31

Nope. You can eat more fat than your body needs and you can a) gain weight or b) maintain.

Why would your body go through the effort of releasing fat stores when you’ve provided more than it needs through your food?

(Diane) #32

My understanding is that being in ketosis means your carb intake is low enough that your body produces ketones by metabolizing fat… fat from your plate or fat from your body. If you’re eating enough fat, your body doesn’t have to burn body fat to produce ketones. .

#33

I am sure you are right. I just do not understand it. As it is I can never hit my fat target now. I cannot imagine the fat I would have to increase to maintain.

(Daisy) #34

Same. I’m always over on protein and under on fat. Every time! I don’t know how to possibly eat more fat! Today I’m trying to fast for a bit (too many Chick-fil-A nuggets yesterday!) and after reading Richard’s post about woman fasting/beefing fat, I’m eating bits of butter, but it just feels wrong lol

#35

It feels wrong because it is wrong. Eew….

(Vladaar Malane) #36

Are you counting your butter that you add to your meals? That adds up.

Cream cheese, I love using my bacon like crackers with fried eggs and cream cheese snacks.

Throw coconut oil and or extra virgin olive oil in your pan. I love eating fat, it feels so liberating. LoL.

(Running from stupidity) #37

Fat is not a target

(Vladaar Malane) #38

It is for some that keep track of macros.

I generally eat fat to satiety, but I also use My fitness Pal just to see how my percentages are.

I don’t sweat it if I’m off now and then. But if your way off, then you might fall out of Ketosis, or be maintaining it by your protein I suppose being changed to glucose. Anyway, just saw their posts saying they have a hard time reaching their fat target.

(Running from stupidity) #39

I track religiously, but that doesn’t make fat a target.

(Jane) #40

I guess I should have added protein to my comment. Your comment was how could you be in ketosis and NOT burn your body fat. If I misunderstood, my apologies.

You can most certainly be in ketosis and not burning body fat. Your calories come from the protein and fat you eat and your metabolism.

At some point they equalize, otherwise people would never stop losing weight and eventually die. Sometimes at a weight people are happy with, sometimes not. If below then the lucky ones can add a few carbs back into their diet or increase fat. If above then fasting is a great tool to lower your setpoint.
