Keto readings below 0.1

(Kat Lewis) #1

I just did my very first blood test reading at 7pm tonight.
This is my first keto level test of any kind. The meter didnt even put up a number .It just said “Lo” which indicates a reading of 0.1 and below according to the instructions. It even shows it below “nutritional ketotsis”. I even ate a cheese danish about 3hours before with a mocha coffee. And had a hot chocolate a few minutes before my test.
What does a reading like this mean for me or anyone? And what can a person do to improve the situation to get to burn fats? As im thoroughly confused. Info that I came to understand is that low keytones are bad and are caused by too much sugar?? Im not a diabetic or prediabetic. Please, help. Thank you.

Being in nutritional ketosis means that your body is burning fat rather than glucose - the way to get to nutritional ketosis is to eat less than 20g of carbs per day or fast. We also limit protein to about .08% of Lean Body Mass (LBM) and eat fat to satiety. Eating a danish will obviously keep you burning glucose (due to the carbs in the pastry), and any milk in your mocha/coffee is also high carb (pure cream is 51% fat whereas milk is 1% fat with 5g of carbs per 100ml so that will keep you out of ketosis). Sounds like you might need to read a bit further on what a ketogenic diet is - there are a lot of resources online or in books. Here’s a link to the newbies section of this forum which will give you some good starting places:

Re: low ketones are bad - it depends on your metabolic situation - are you insulin resistant? High insulin is the culprit and that is what people are trying to overcome with a ketogenic diet - if you aren’t experiencing symptoms of insulin resistance (fat around the tummy, diabetes, inflammatory diseases etc (the list goes on) then you may be able to tolerate more carbs - a LCHF diet allows up to 150grams of carbs per day but you won’t be in nutritional ketosis if you eat that much.

Wow! Youve been amazingly helpful! I had a feeling I was backwards! Thank you so much. I will begin reading the links and move forward.

Your carbs need to be 20g or below.

How did you get a ketone meter before you know what Keto is ?

Hey, if a drunk stumbles into an AA meeting, I guess they’re in the right place.

protein.

You have to be low in carbs for a while before your body makes ketones (ketosis).
