Do you have digestive issues? Constipation or diarrhea? Don’t have to answer here but I’ve seen quite a lot of reference to digestive issues showing up as itching and/or rashes. I had Ted itchy patches of skin until I figured out I wasn’t producing enough stomach acid and wasn’t digesting food properly.
Keto rash? Pls help
Well, it could be caused by a number of things. Keto rash itself is still an unexplained phenomena though, some people theorize it can be caused by toxic substances released from fat stores.
Are you eating anything you didn’t eat pre keto? Some foods like nuts, eggs, dairy, artificial sweeteners are prone to allergic reactions in people sensitive to them.
Have you changed anything that might touch your face? New body products like lotions or perfumes, facial products, hair products, face towels, shower products, linens, makeup, makeup brushes.
If you use makeup, are your brushes clean and sanitary? Brushes should be cleaned between each use, though, most don’t do it.
Are you prone to breaking out with similar spots when your hormones change? Example times would be during your menstrual cycle, when taking a birth control product, or during puberty. Keto does effect hormones and usually helps rebalance them.
Are the spots bug bites? Do they contain fluid?
As you see, there are soooo many things that can cause a reaction like this. If these spots don’t seem to be actual zits, you can stop with the TTO as it may aggravate the condition. Lavender essential oil is good for redness, inflammation, and itching and can be used undiluted as a spot treatment. Try not to scratch or pick the spots or aggravate them with scrubbing or facial products. You can also try an OTC allergy pill like Equate 24 hour non drowsy. If it’s a histamine response, this can help the symptoms clear up.
This may be Candida (yeast) die off from not getting enough sugar/carbs. In my case I get a rash over my entire belly, when I take a hot bath. A naturopath would know what I’m suggesting is the problem. A cleanse may help. It helped me a few years ago. There are many treatments for Candida, but I don’t know which one is best. Restoring gut health is ideal. I am currently researching this topic myself. I may send you a personal message. I have to history of these rashes. Dermatology was NO help. It only made my health much worse.
Google Candida.
The only thing I could think of was dairy. Im Asian and i didnt grow up eating lots of dairy even on my adult years. So i cut that off and they’re still there. I’ve been increasing my carb intake to almost 50 G and getting carbs from greens and strawberries and almonds. I usually don’t put anything on my face and it was clear before this diet. I just ordered a nurritional yeast to see if that will help. I’ve seen a decrease in appearance by using the TTr oil and acv toner but obviously they’re not 100% gone. Mine is not as bad as the other people’s rash but It just frustrates me considering my face was clear before.
My spots are like bug bites. Hey dont contain any fluid. Just red, itchy bumps.
How do you do a cleanse?
Health food stores have a variety of cleanses. My rash over a third of my body and face had persisted 24/7 for months. The Dermatologist just kept giving me Prednisone, which only suppressed the symptoms. As soon as the round of Pred ended the rash returned. One day on an intuitive whim I bought a cleanse. This I think it was by Irwin Naturals. It was easy to use with clear directions. Within two or three days my face and body rash had vanished. I was stunned.
As I was drifting off to sleep last night, I remembered reading about other imbalances that overwhelm the liver and cause these rashes. It’s written by an internationally renowned Naturopath. I will have to dig around for that book. It’s fascinating. I know what you’re going through. I’ve been there.
If a cleanse does the healing, that would be awesome.
Hope you find relief soon.
Thank you for the reply. I found two cleanse by Irwin naturals. There’s a daily cleanse and then cleanse with probiotics. Which one did you use? Thanks
It’s been at least five years since I used their cleanse. They have likely improved their products by now. If it were me, I’d go with the one with probiotics. It may be stronger. Also, the store manager may have advice for your acute needs.
That would be awesome if a powerful cleanse product works for you as well as it did for me.
Sending healing thoughts your way.
Thank you. I’ll go to my Natural Grocers this weekend to find a liver cleanse. Hopefully they’ll have that brand you used.
You could ask the nutrition manager for her/his advice on cleanses. There may be an even better cleanse than Irwin Naturals. It’s worth getting a second opinion.
Cleanses are amazing. Let us know how it turns out.
Have you taken any anti-histamines before?
If so, take the same one for two days running, and see if it subsides. If it does, it is an allergy of some sort. At that point, it’s just a matter of eliminating foods until you find out which one.
I had hives in the second week of Keto. Thought it was Keto Rash, but it turns out it was the switch to erythritol as a sweetener. It’s a sugar alcohol, and apparently although rare in all populations, is slightly more common in Asians. (I’m Chinese descent).
It’s interesting, because most things I am allergic to, I react either immediately, or at most, hours after exposure. It took a week to build up, and 2 days to subside after I stopped taking it. It seems to need to build up, as excretion of sugar alcohols is slow. Apparently about 75-80% in a 24 hour period.
Dr. Berg talks about keto rash: When you release more fat than usual. Fat is the substance that stores all sorts of toxins. And if your liver or gallbladder is not releasing toxins in a regular manner, your body could back up with toxic sludge causing a reaction in the skin.
Ox Bile (Purified Bile Salt): Take when you eat!
Example:
Yeah, my allergies are similar in reaction times except for aspartame. It took 2 weeks to get to me (years ago before keto) and when it hit, being struck by lightning would have been more comfortable. I was leaving marks from itching my face and neck in my sleep.
Did you ever figure out the problem. I started Keto 6 weeks ago and as a sweetener I have been using Erythritol. I had the same rash you have, my ear swelled up, I got splotches on my face that kept growing. Now, I am super sensitive to any cosmetics on my skin and I have hives and rashes on my arms and sometimes legs. The derm said it was contact dermatitis, but I believe ketones or Erythritol is causing rashes and sensitivity. What do you think? Have you been using Erythritol?
Hi. I honestly dont know what caused mine. I use swerve sweetener and it doesnt seem to bother me. Mine went away then came back then they’re gone again. I only get them on my face. What I’m just doing now is I use acv/water cleanser, I drink my electrolyte mix (magnesium citrate, salt), I don’t eat that much cheese anymore and i take an equate multivitamin. I don’t know if i’ll get them again. Hopefully you can find relief.
This might help! THIS POST DOES NOT mean or imply you have a fatty liver! But it does not hurt to explore any possibilities?
- How to know if you have a fatty liver? “…Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, is a dangerous and often difficult to detect condition. …” “…Microscopic view of healthy liver and nonalcoholic fatty liver …” “…It is difficult to distinguish nonalcoholic fatty liver disease…”
Choline is the Vitamin for a Fatty Liver & Can Prevent Keto Rash Dr. Berg talks about keto rash and a fatty liver. You can also get a rash (keto rash) from autophagy, a conditon whereby the body is recycling old damaged proteins and cleaning up microbes in the body - a type of detox. But when the liver is fatty it loses the capasity to detox, clean the body and things can back up. Choline, one of the B-vitamins can help prevent a fatty liver. Choline is high in egg yolk, beef liver, and cruciferous vegetables. Your intestinal flora (friendly bacteria) have a lot to do with absorbing choline so if there is an inbalance you may not even absorb choline. Choline works closely with purified bile salts to break down fats.

Hopefully you figure it out too. I am undergoing patch testing right now too to stop using cosmetics that bother me and I am slowly going off Keto and swerve to see if it helps. I have been using a lot of swerve everyday, so I thought it might be the problem. A lot of people get rashes from Erythritol.
Oh my gosh! The whole reason I joined this forum is because since starting Keto (3 weeks ago) I’ve developed a red itchy rash around my lips. I read everything on Keto rash, but the location just didn’t fit the bill. Everything pointed to an allergy but I’ve dismissed the idea because I haven’t had any new foods, just not having carbs. Except for stevia! I really dislike artificial sweeteners, so I never consumed them before, that is until the sugar cravings kicked in after going low carb. I have been having stevia almost every day to try to curb the cravings. I will cut that out for a week and see if the rash subsides.
Minute 23:30 has the apple cider vinegar and berries protocol.
