So I decided to start keto after my husband started it in March at the recommendation of his doctor. I am 37 year old, 5’0’’, 116 lb, I have infertility issues and IBS-C that flares after my period. My fasting glucose is around 95, sometimes jumps to 100+, depending when I do the blood work. After reading a lot during these months so I can help my husband I thought I might benefit form it. I hope keto will help me with my IBS and my fasting glucose, I am not having much hope it can help with my infertility. I plan on sticking with it on the long run, but I am not sure how I will be able to do this an have the occasional comfort food. And when I say occasional I mean once every few month I like to do some crepes, or fried dough with cheese…high starch carbs…
I have no problem eating under 20 net carbs per day, day in day out, I can stick with it. But I do like my treat from time to time…
If I stick with it for 3 month or until I get keto adapted, will it hurt if I have my treats once in awhile after that?
Keto on the long run and carbs
There have been many anecdotal cases of keto helping with infertility… some even joke that you better start birth control when you start keto! So perhaps there is some hope.
I have an occasional carby food. However I think its important to wait a few weeks or months to indulge to let you body continue to adjust. This past weekend I had lots of bread and sweet…my boyfriend and I were bad while on vacation. I am paying for it in the form on fatigue, bloating, etc. This alone makes me want to not do it often…I normally don’t miss carbs and sugar at all!
I plan on being super strict for the first 3 months, to make sure I am fully adapted. My question was what happens if you eat carbs after you are adapted. I guess you need at least 3 days to remove the carbs from your system, but after that are you fine, or the keto flu starts again…
I have had an occassional cheat days since I started keto and this is how my body reacts.
I get feel a little lethargic. I dont’ mean not wanting to get out of bed. But I don’t hop out of bed with energy, I kind of have to slowly drag myself out of bed. Kind of like a hangover
I get “hungrier” the next day or two. I will find that I want to eat more often in the next 24-48 hours after cheating. I also find that I crave carby foods as well.
Bubbly guts. After going back to keto after a day of eating carbs, the next day my stomach makes all sorts of sounds. My stool tends to loosen up as well.
Keto flu - I don’t typically go through keto flu. Keto flu is typically an electrolyte imbalance. I make sure that I eat plenty of foods high in sodium, potassium, and magnesium as well as drink 1-2 ketoades a day. Other than when I first started Keto, I have not went through keto flu again.
I started on 5/1/17 and these are the times I cheated
Wedding - 2 days
Move - 1 week
Kickball Tournament - 1 day
It is entirely possible that your taste for ‘comfort foods’ will change and you won’t want them anymore. It is also common for those who have IBS to have it resolve with a keto diet and eating high carb foods bring it back in full force. This was my experience when on a few occasions, I unknowingly ate something off plan.
After literally years of being keto, I can now tolerate some things with little to no problem. My guess is that I have healed by gut. I did not intentionally eat off plan for at least 4 yrs. - ever. Now I will only eat something off plan if it is a very special occasion and it is never dessert type things. A cob of corn - once a year (2nd time this year), a Frankfurter because I was in Vienna and a beer because I am on holiday.
I would never have predicted this would be my future when I started and certainly would have found the notion to be way too much of a commitment but it has happened because keto made me feel soooo much better. I wanted to keep that going and I have and will continue to.
Is that what happens when u go off the wagon? I had 2 birthday parties this weekend. Way too much pizza and cake. I have been so bloated and gassy, it’s killing me. Skipped breakfast and lunch today, seems to be helping. Lesson learned
I usually get a headache and feel tired and bloated. I usually will fast the following day then feast on keto foods for a few more days until I get back to my normal IF schedule.
OMG YES.
For my other half’s birthday, we planned a trip to Olive Garden. I knew I was going to cheat. I planned to eat a low carb meal, but still have some breadsticks and some salad. The breadsticks were AWFUL. Terrible! I was so shocked! Then a few days later, I made French toast. Formerly my favorite breakfast food. I gagged.
It was sad. I actually was physically “smad”. (name that reference for bonus points)
My wife loves Gilmore Girls, haha. She actually just marathoned everything Netflix had. I dunno I’m biased against Olive Garden, as someone who is half Italian. To me their food is all fake, and those ridiculous chairs they use with casters on them? WTF?
Though, they do have some pretty good non-Italian foods! I had the chicken piccata (which, depending upon who you ask is either Mediterranean or Italian) with some zucchini slices that were coated in parm cheese. Yum.
The last time I attempted to eat at the Olive Garden was probably about 7 yrs. ago and after looking over their menu, decided to eat elsewhere. I will admit that I don’t eat in restaurants much. I prefer my own cooking and ingredients.
I married into an Italian family, and they too are scornful of Olive Garden. I do like that never-ending salad, though.
