Keto Newbie Update - 12 Weeks and 30 lbs behind me

#1

As the title suggests I just wrapped-up my 12th week of going keto, I’ve lost 30 lbs and a lot of inches. I’m slightly embarrassed to say all without any exercise at all. Just started back at the gym this week and I wonder where I’d be if I’d been going to the gym?

In addition to the weight-loss I’m sleeping better, a ton of energy, my high blood pressure is down, my joints don’t hurt, major clarity in my mind and overall I just feel great! Not sure how much of that is the weight-loss or keto but either way I’ll take it!

I don’t want to say it’s been easy, but it hasn’t been extremely difficult switching my diet to Keto. I’d say the hardest part was the time of year I chose to do it over Halloween (wife had candy bowl with my favorite candy bars in it), Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Didn’t cave to any of the Halloween candy, took day off of keto and ate/drank whatever I wanted on Thanksgiving, and pretty much stuck to plan with the exception of alcohol over Christmas and New Years Eve.

Also proud of the fact that I had two European trips in there as well as a pretty heavy domestic travel schedule. Believe it or not I found being fat adapted and easily being able to fast worked out great on my International flights. Took nuts to snack on but honestly when I broke them out it was more because of boredom than hunger.

I don’t intentionally do a 18:6 fast but I’m no longer hungry in the morning so that’s how it works out. Done a couple of 24 hour fasts just because I wasn’t hungry, and I think I’m going to try a 72 hour shortly.

I’m lucky because in terms of eating I’m a creature of habit; prior to Keto I ate the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day (with slight variation if I was traveling) and at least 3 or 4 of my dinners each week were the same thing. With keto 80% of the time I eat the same lunch and about the same % of time the same dinner unless we go out. Been very easy. My meals are very simple, most complex thing I’ve made has been mashed cauliflower which I love, very simple.

I’ve kept my macros at 70-25-5, and my TOTAL carbs at or under 20. No supplements, fat bombs, bulletproof coffee etc. just simple 70-25-5 diet and it’s seemed to work for me.

I see my Dr. next week (doing another post on this later) should be interesting to hear what he has to say. Plan on continuing what I’ve been doing but adding 5 days a week at the gym or at least a 60 minute walk. I’d like to lose another 25 lbs then I’ll be at goal weight. I know this next 25 won’t be as easy as the first 30 was but I’m confident I’ll be able to do it.

When people see me and ask me what I’ve been doing to lose the weight and I tell them they’re shocked, almost disbelief that the high fat diet alone has generated the type of weight-loss that it has. Never get tired of that reaction.

Hope this quick update helps any others with questions about eating keto.

Well done, should be proud of yourself.
Can’t wait to see what doctor will say.

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to losing the next lbs.

Thought I’d add I watched Fit2Fat2Fit last night and they showed one of the trainers who was gaining weight (premise of show is training gains 30% of their body weight and then loses it with their client) and his wife and the struggles they had because he had all this really bad food in the house because he had to gain something like 65 lbs and how difficult it was on his fit wife; she was being tempted and cracked a couple of times and ate cookies or something like that. I guess I’m lucky as I don’t really have these temptations; I live in a home with a 16 son and a wife who can eat just about anything and not gain a lb. There are tons of carby, sugary foods in my house, cookies, chips, soda, candy, beer, bread etc. and they don’t tempt me. Every meal I have to reach past something that is not on my plan to get my bacon, or eggs or avocado etc.I think this has also helped greatly.

When i do get a craving or think man that would taste good (sushi, beer) I tell myself I’ve had years of consuming that, way more than my share LOL, I can do without it and I move on.

I understand not everyone can do this, feel luck that so far its worked this way for me.

Hi. you said you are a creature of habit and ate pretty much the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day. Just curious as to what that looks like? I like to keep it simple as well and don’t mind eating the same thing day after day.
Thanks!

Breakfast: 3-4 8oz cups of coffee with 1/2 tablespoon of cream in each cup
Lunch (about 1:00 p.m.): 3 strops thick cut bacon, 2 eggs cooked in bacon grease, 1/2 avocado
Dinner: Grilled Chicken thigh salad with blue cheese and blue cheese dressing (only 85g Dole very veggie salad mix), avocado, peppers and other salad stuff that’s not going to push me over 20g total carbs OR charcuterie board w/different cheeses. May add some grass-fed butter if I need to get my fat up.

I rarely snack but if I do it’s pork rinds, macadamia nuts or pecans. Pretty simple stuff and I have no issue with no variety. On the weekends I might throw a rib eye or salmon on the grill.

I’m now down 40 lbs in 5 months (today) eating this way.
