treating MS and other autoimmune disorders with supplements.
More pills instead of diet? … but yes. Really interesting!
Silly scientists. Of course keto helps with autoimmune. That’s one of the reasons fasting helps with flares.
The idea of supplementing an almost keto diet with BHB/MCT has been around for epilepsy for awhile where the levels needed can be hard to maintain with diet alone (87-90 fat).
We know the keto changes the gut microbiome, but this is interesting that they zeroed on a particular culture. I’m never sure how helpful that is, though. I’m curious how other strains would perform.
I can see this having applications for things like Alzheimer’s where there may be some benefit to keto but compliance would be hard.
One problem is that not all people produce ketones to the same amount, even if they eat the same diet. It’s much more variable than I thought it would be.
The gut microbiome is always an issue. It does something. It’s often a challenge to figure out what.
Also, the problem with measuring circulating ketones is that it doesn’t measure production and consumption, only the gap between them.
I suspect that the point of the study is to promote supplementation, because the fact that a keto diet and fasting can help with auto-immune problems was established thirty or forty years ago.
Exactly. For me, gluten triggers RA flares, and RA flares without dietary trigger (on carnivore) seem to cause diarrhea. What is causing what? There seems to be a feedback loop element at play, too.
