Keto knowledge is expanding

#1

Went to Ketocon in Louisville this weekend.I learned one hard fact.It evolves.Great program and good people. One true thing once you figure your fat to protein ratio seems all else falls into place. As for MCT Vitamins col

#2

And other supplements are not needed. Each person needs to just keep it simple.Eat fats protein if your diet is clean nothing else needs to be added.

#3

That’s a blanket statement you can’t just apply, people need to supplement what they need, that they’re not getting from diet. We all eat different. What one person gets and needs, somebody else won’t. Keto doesn’t magically mean you don’t need to supplement in what you’re lacking.

#4

If your diet is so lacking that you have to add there has to be a problem with your keto clean keto should have flushed out the toxins if eating 2meals that are true keto you should not need MCT collagen multi vitamin in other words quit waisting money use it on food not pills if there is a illness then research get exactly what needed after 3 years of hearing reading researching pure keto excerise sleep that should do

(Robin) #5

Careful with those blanket statements. It’s an opinion and you’re entitled to it. But many of us are well-Informed, thriving long-timers, and still sticking with supplements that we have seen benefits from.
You do you.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

I don’t think the two thoughts are contradictory. If our diet is known to be deficient in zinc, then the problem is with our diet. We shouldn’t need to take pills on account of an inadequate diet, we should fix our diet.

But if we have problems absorbing enough zinc, or a need for zinc that is on the outside of the curve, it makes sense to supplement. That’s treatment for a known problem.

What makes no sense, to my mind, anyway, is to take zinc because we’ve heard it has health benefits, without knowing one way or the other if we really need it. That’s as crazy as deliberately eating in a way that deprives us of zinc.

Keto knowledge is expanding

Sounds more like your mind is closing down to the possibility of other people having differing needs and opinions.

#8

Sorry I get so tired of people being used and wasting money but if rich please buy everything that says Keto cancer needs are different if Ill needs be different but a person who is good health needs little unless he believes taking 20 or 30 things added makes him keto only thing I think is needed in my area is fish oil we don’t have fresh fish but if you feel like you gotta have something your money buy it

(Rebecca ) #9

That’s why they are called supplements…they are meant to supplement an already healthy way of eating. The quandary is, everyone’s idea of “healthy” differs.

(Laurie) #10

I can see both sides. A few years ago I was taking about 30 supplements. It was ridiculous, and I gave them all away. Now I live in northern Canada, and I take Vitamin D.

And 20 years ago I cured my mild arthritis with MSM and glucosamine. I could have gotten glucosamine from gnawing the cartilage off the ends of meat bones, but I tend to buy boneless meat…

#11

Your getting my point finally.Keto can run into big money if you fall for everything.Keep it basic keep it simple. If as you go along you need something add it but don’t dump hundreds of dollars on nonsense.Research before buying.I use tanning bed for vitamin D.I went to carinvor. Then added slowly back in to find my needs.Myself needs 60 % fat if not more.Crazy right.Just saying those of us need to help others save money.

I take the supplements I need to perform at my best. They’re sod all to do with being keto, and everything to do with being a human with an active and demanding lifestyle, some I’ve been taking since I was even keto (which anyone who knows me knows is a very long time).

Anything that’s specifically labelled at keto is over priced BS, I’ve always said the same, but people take supplements for any number of reasons so to come along and post a sweeping statement about none being necessary is just as much BS as everyone is different and has different needs and demands.

It’s well established that even with the best intentions and cleanest diet, it’s near impossible to get all necessary nutrition from food these days because of how it’s grown / produced, the soil is over worked and depleted, animals are raised in darkness with no natural activity and fed on absolute crap which means their bodies and subsequently the meat we eat is also absolute crap.

That said, I don’t personally worry about nutrients at all and I don’t supplement vitamins except the specific ones I know my body needs, like D3 and K2 to help me through the winter darkness (since pre keto) and keep visual migraines away. As I said, absolutely sod all to do with my diet, just to do with being human.

(Allie) #14

Your point is that keto supplements are a waste of money, that’s true, but what you said is that no supplements are needed. That’s BS.

#15

Reread I said if you need them buy them but you must have forgot what you went Thu when you began if you had that group or person to work you Thu your need you’d have money to buy proper foods if you actually believe you need 50 supplements go for it but in the end you only need a vitamin D or a K or fish oil but you went down that rabbit hole bout everything that said was for keto and know you don’t have the resources to buy the meat eggs and butter because you fell in the trap you need to buy all these pills or powders.Me I always say stay on your meds move your diet to meat eggs butter for a month then slowly experiment with nuts supplements to find your base me I need nothing at 68 odd bird no meds here. But don’t start just buying junk just because it said keto or you tube said if on keto this is mandatory

I think keto causes anxiety in people when they start reading into things and watching YouTube. I went on keto before. Just eggs meat and certain vegetables. Just drank plain water. Everything was good. Started back on it in June. First month was fine. Started watching videos and decided to do simple fasting. Then I felt like ■■■■ one day. Felt like Covid for a little over a week. Kept watching videos on how to deal with it. All about electrolytes electrolytes electrolytes. When that period was over I started getting palpitations and tingles. Watched videos. Electrolytes electrolytes electrolytes. Bought expensive as electrolytes. Still had problems. Got bloodwork. All normal. Saw a cardiologist. All normal. Increased my salt intake. It worked at keeping the issues away. If I didn’t get enough though, the palpitations and tingles would happen. Even though I took plenty of electrolyte supplements and monitored everything. Shortly after Increasing the salt I got horrible urgent get to the toilet now pretty much just straight liquid diarrhea throughout the day. I would be bloated with bad stomach pain and no appetite. This was going on for almost two months. I’ve ended up in the ER twice feeling very dizzy and heart racing. All my vitals were perfect. The first time my potassium dropped to 3.3. A few days later I had to go back cause of the same issue, yet this time my electrolytes were in normal range. This past Sunday it hit again. Instead of going to the ER I went to an urgent care place and saw an actual doctor. All my bloodwork was fine. Calcium dropped a bit, but I cut out all diary in case it was a lactose issue. I told him my other issues with the ER and he told me they were anxiety attacks. I could stay on Keto, but I shouldn’t take any supplements and calm it with the salt. Our bodies know how to regulate things. I went off the diet that night with some pizza. I threw away my $60 electrolyte drops and stopped using salt. I figured give things a rest for a week. After just one day off the diet I stopped having diarrhea. Everything is back to normal. I do have to get a colonoscopy now to see if any other issues caused it. I plan to start keto again after my procedure, but I’m done with all the “how to” crap. Keep it simple. Don’t eat carbs and just drink water.

I got some ocean front property for sale in Kansas, interested? WOW! Do of all us with our “so lacking” diets a favor and post your days Cronometer diary so we can see all those micros pinned to the end on your whole foods only.

(Jane) #18

Exaggerate MUCH??? LOL

Nobody on this thread argued they needed 50 supplements. Most take a few they feel they need and you took offense.

Obviously you aren’t a 60+ year old woman with old lady thin skin that a clean keto diet doesn’t fix. It fixed a LOT of things for me, but my skin wasn’t one of them. OTOH adding some powdered collagen to my morning coffee has helped. Does my skin look 10 years younger? Nope. But it is better with the supplement.

Five years of keto and extended fasting has faded my age spots and firmed up my saggy skin from the weight loss but it hasn’t fixed everything old age has thrown at me, dang it!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #19

I hear you, sister! It’s been five years, and I’m still waiting for keto to turn my hair blond and give me three more inches of height. (heavy sigh)

Keto knowledge is expanding and that is great. A lot more clinical trials and research being done and it’s starting to become a bit more mainstream.

I appreciate your enthusiasm kanetuck, sounds like it was a very inspiring Ketocon. Unfortunately there is no one size fits all way of eating, we are all too different in gender, age, activity levels, pre-existing health conditions, genetics etc. Plus we’re all at different stages of our journey to good health. I hope the feedback you’ve received on this thread helps you to be a bit less zealous. If we, who know how great keto can be, get our backs up, you’ll likely put off a lot of non-keto folks from even trying keto. Most people can smell “religion” a mile off.

I don’t like buying supplements, I try to adjust my food to incorporate nourishment where I can. Magnesium supplementation has improved annoying leg cramps at 5am daily. Does anybody know how to get enough daily magnesium through food as I can’t physically eat anymore salt, beef, butter, spinach, eggs etc.?
Thanks.
