Keto & gastric bypass

(Jackie ) #1

I’m getting ready to start a keto lifestyle; doing my research, cleaning out my cupboards, buying supplements etc.

I had gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago but didn’t lose as much weight as I wanted to. I also don’t have a gallbladder. Therefore my body doesn’t process fat like normal people nor does it absorb nutrients as well.

I’ve read that I should modify my keto to be less fat, more protein and more veg carbs.
Specifically:
113g protein
50g carbs (from veg, not grains/starch)
39g fat
1000 cals

Advice? Opinions? I really want to do keto but want to make sure I’m getting proper nutrition AND will still lose weight. I’m currently 220lbs at 5’6”

We have a couple of people here that are doing keto without gallbladders, hopefully they can chime in.

Doing calorie restriction plus trying to enter keto is going to be doubly hard. Normally the main goal first is to get your body efficient at burning fat (fat adaptation), so no counting calories. Took me 2 months. Then, you can calorie restrict and not feel like you’re dying, makes it a ton easier.

If you do both at the same time, Just keep up with the electrolytes (Na, K, Mg) to offset the carb withdraw symptoms (headache, nausea, fatigue). Good Luck!

I wasn’t planning to count calories to start out. Every keto calculator site I’ve found just happens to show calories too.

My main focus to start will be meeting my fat and protein goals and staying under my carb amount.

I figure after 4-6 weeks, if I’m not hitting ketosis then I’ll consider slowly upping the fat and lowering the carbs until I find the magic combo

I am in the same boat. I’ve been doing keto about 31/2 weeks I had wls about 2 1/2 years ago. I don’t try to eat a lot of fat. I’ve only had one issue with dumping from eating too much fat. I tried keto icecream… it was yummy but so not work if later😬. Good luck!
